Introducing the Alta Vista Terrace project, located in Chicago’s landmarked row of turn-of-the-century townhomes.

Outside, the block’s Victorian character remains fully intact: bracketed cornices, bay windows, carved limestone.

The work ahead is restraint as much as renovation — preserving what made this a landmark while making it livable again.

Architect: @34ten

Bracketed cornice work, a curved bay window hood, hand-carved limestone trim — original to this Alta Vista Terrace townhome.

The bones of the house, still original.

Herringbone parquet under decades of wear, drapery and finishes untouched since installed.

Before renovation: Original crystal chandelier hanging over the stairwell.

Brick-pattern tile in the kitchen meets original herringbone oak parquet at the threshold — a small detail that says a lot about how this house was built and lived in. Both original, both worth keeping in mind as the renovation moves through each room. taken in Alta Vista Terrace District by @northcenterconstruction

First impressions always start from the outside, but the real story begins once you step in. I love photographing homes like this, where the exterior gives you a hint, and the interior completely sets the mood. Two worlds, one story, and so many details worth slowing down for.

Inside our latest Gold Coast renovation project - a beautiful custom built in bookcase. Extending under the window sill, the bold blue paint provides a striking contrast to the naturally stained flooring and gold accents in this sunny living room.
