During his 30-year career as an intelligence officer, Sean Cumming has led teams on national security assignments around the world. From the final days of the Cold War to the 2011 Libyan civil war and beyond, he helped his teams rise to the complex challenges of the field.

As a faculty member for the master's in National Security and Intelligence Studies with @northeasterncps , he continues to mentor the next generation of talent.

To bring the topics he teaches to life, Cumming invites guest speakers, pulls from case studies, and integrates hands-on activities. The multifaceted approach is designed to develop the skills of communication and analysis that will help students succeed in their future careers.

"The objective is not to reward the team that gets the answer 'right,'" he says of one war game activity, "But to cultivate the ability to reason rigorously, adapt quickly, and make informed decisions when the ground is shifting beneath you."

For cybersecurity master's student Anania Gebregiorgis, turning in the assignment — and even presenting it at the Northeastern research showcase — isn't the end of the work. His Parallel AI AppSec Architecture (PAAA) framework started as a class project, but he continues to develop it independently.

The PAAA is a multi-agent security framework that Gebregiorgis designed in response to the new types of vulnerabilities introduced by agentic AI coding. At the showcase in April he presented the theoretical structure of the project. The conversations he had at the event helped him fine-tune his approach before prototyping.

He told writer Madelaine Millar, “I got great feedback from professors, from AI researchers, and from actual people working in industry — people and companies that work on AI security. It is a very big subject, and still a growing subject; we don't know what we have ahead. But it got me excited to go through it with every other person.”

Fall term is here, and this week we welcomed our new first year students to Northeastern!

With every new cohort, our community gets a new profile. Each student brings their academic and professional experience to campus with them and makes a richer experience for everyone. We're looking forward to seeing our newest class connect with their peers and start to make their mark at the university. It was a family member's experience with an online scam that drew the attention of Oluwatobiloba Mercy Akinwunmi towards cybersecurity, and an encounter at the Women in CyberSecurity (WiCyS) conference that brought her to Northeastern.

Using a grant she had won for graduate school, she flew from her home in Nigeria to attend the conference for the second time to research graduate schools. That's where she learned about the unique Cybersecurity Align program from @khourycollege .

"The Align program felt like it was designed for someone exactly like me, coming from a mathematics background. I wanted a program that that could combine strong technical education, with practical—and inspirational—learning," she told writer Rebecca Moon Ruark. "[It] emphasized end-on-end security, application, collaboration, and rewarding impact. It felt like the right door opened at exactly the right time."

Since joining the program at our campus, she has been developing her research on preventing online fraud through detecting malicious messages early. She's also returned to the @WiCySorg conference, this time on the other side of the booth.

This year's convention of the @girlscouts was held here in Washington, DC, and our team was there to chat and connect!

Girl Scouts from across the U.S. and around the world were there sharing their leadership skills and creativity. Our Arlington team members Emily Mazzola and Jennifer Brown swapped stories and pins with incredible young leaders. One of the students who stopped by was Marissa, a Gold Award winner for her sustainable community action project.

We loved having the opportunity to attend the convention, and came away inspired by all of the great ideas coming out of this next generation of innovators. by @northeasternarlington

The first Arlington cohort of the Graduate Certificate in Engineering Leadership and AI Fundamentals is now enrolling for January, 2027. Offered by The Gordon Institute of Engineering Leadership at Northeastern University, this program can be completed in one year and prepares early- and mid-career engineers to step into leadership roles.

The certificate can be completed as a standalone course, or stacked with four of the engineering and computer science master's degrees offered at our campus.

The Council on Military Transition to Education (CMTE) is a national consortium of select colleges and universities focused on helping military service members and veterans' success in higher education. CMTE provides practice and policy recommendations to the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), U.S. Department of Labor, and U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

We have been honored to host their annual meeting both this year and last thanks to faculty member David Hagen, associate teaching professor and director of the National Security and Intelligence master's program.

This week's event included presentations by and discussions with six DoD representatives. It was an informative and productive day, and we're glad to be able to support CMTE in their important work.

And of course, we're going to make sure our guests get to take in the roof deck view! The group is pictured here with Ronna Halbgewachs, Associate Dean & Campus Administrator, getting some fresh air between sessions. by @northeasternarlington

At the Student Research Showcase this spring, Makaita Murogodo zoomed out from cybersecurity tools and systems. She presented her research on the field itself, specifically her findings that teams that are gender-diverse are more effective than those that stick to the male-dominated norm.

In her research, reports Madelaine Millar, Makaita found that "gender-diverse cybersecurity teams experienced more effective collaboration and problem-solving, better retention, and detected a wider range of threats than single-gender teams. She estimates the performance improvement among gender-diverse teams could be as high as 36 percent."

With a six-month co-op lined up next, Makaita is making her way up in the field, while making sure to put her hand out to the others who are coming up. She cofounded our campus' chapter of Women in CyberSecurity ( @wicsysorg ) with fellow cybersecurity student Mercy Akinwunmi. And she has found a mentor in program director Elizabeth K. Hawthorne, who is a founding advisory board member of the national organization.

Last week, our Regional Dean and CEO Jamie Jones Miller took the stage as a panelist at The New IC, the annual symposium for mid-career intelligence professionals from the Intelligence and National Security Alliance.

The keynote by Lori Wade, Chief Learning Officer for the Central Intelligence Agency, set the tone:

➡️ Work is changing as we're doing it.

➡️ Critical thinking, judgment, independence, these aren't soft skills anymore. They're mission-critical ones.

Hearing how the CIA is rethinking its learning strategy reinforced something we think about every day at Northeastern Arlington: academic and public-private partnerships have never been more central to workforce development.

From career pivots to building mission-ready skills, the conversation challenged attendees to think differently about how they grow, lead, and navigate the road ahead.

Representing Northeastern, Jamie brought that thread to life on the panel "Maximizing Mid-Career: The Strategic YES." Some of her advice to the audience:

➡️ "Do a self-inventory and assess the time to value: what do you need right now versus in the long term? Break it into bite-sized pieces that make you the unicorn."

➡️ "Reverse engineer it. Find the person who has the job you want and identify their supervisor to figure out what credentials got them there."

➡️ "Ask yourself whether you are pivoting toward something or away from something?"

➡️ "Find the capability gap between where you are now and where the mission needs you now and in the future. Find the shortest credible path to close that gap, and start on Monday."

The Ignite rounds closed it out with unscripted, honest lessons from peers across government and industry. It was exactly the kind of cross-sector conversation Northeastern Arlington was built to be part of.
