Europe summer, but Balkan edition 🇲🇰

Ohrid ended up being one of my favourite stops of the summer. I really had no idea what to expect and it shocked me in the best way possible. If you’re heading this way, these are the spots I’d definitely make time for:

📍 Old Town Ohrid for wandering around and getting lost in the little streets

📍 St. John at Kaneo for that iconic view over the lake

📍 Plaošnik for the church, ruins and views

📍 Samoil’s Fortress for one of the best views over Ohrid and the lake

📍 Bay of Bones for something a little different. A prehistoric settlement built out over the water

📍 St. Naum Monastery for the beautiful lake views and springs. It’s a bit outside Ohrid but worth the trip

📍 Kaneo Beach if you want to actually get in the water with a pretty incredible backdrop

The best part about Ohrid is that you can have a slow few days here and still have plenty to see. Lake days, old town wandering, swimming, mountains and sunsets all in one

A few days by Lake Ohrid 🇲🇰

This was definitely one of the stops from this trip I’m happiest I didn’t skip. I was sadly pretty sick during my time in Ohrid but that didn’t stop me from exploring this beautiful lakeside town.

Things I loved:
Beach club in Kaneo
Old town wandering and exploring the fort
St. John at Kaneo
The Bay of Bones
St. Naum Monastery
The Paper museum (seriously so cool)
Slow mornings at cool cafés
And… doing absolutely nothing for a few days

35 years of independence 🇲🇰

We grew up in a country where doors were rarely locked, coffee was never just coffee and “have something to eat” meant you weren’t leaving the table anytime soon.

We had courtyards full of voices, the smell of ajvar in September, grandmothers with a cure for everything, grandfathers with a story for every hill and neighbors who sometimes knew more about us than we did. 😅

Our songs weren’t learned from the internet, but around the table. Our traditional dances weren’t “folklore content” — they were a reason to hold hands.

Somewhere along the way, we started believing that moving forward meant moving farther away.

Away from the villages, old houses, crafts, stories, the land and for many, Macedonia itself. Maybe alongside asking, “How do I leave?” we should start asking: - What is worth saving before it disappears?

Ask the elders while there is still someone to tell the stories. Visit the places we only know from road signs. Learn the songs, symbols, traditions and stories behind who we are.
Not to live in the past, but to avoid becoming people with a future and no roots.

The world is big. Go. Learn. Travel. Explore.

But remember the road back.
Macedonia shouldn’t only be loved when we miss it. We have to learn how to LIVE it again.

Esto es Ohrid, en Macedonia del Norte; un pueblito con uno de los lagos más antiguos de Europa y de aguas súper cristalinas, historia milenaria en cada esquina y vistas que son literalmente de postal!! 🥹

Bordeando sus acantilados en barco descubrís una perspectiva única de este pueblo que es Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO

El secreto mejor guardado de los Balcanes se llama Ohrid 🇲🇰

Just outside Skopje lies Matka Canyon — one of those unexpected hidden gems that makes you wonder why more people aren’t talking about North Macedonia.
