How do we talk to our children about sexism, respect and healthy relationships? And how do we help them recognise and challenge misogyny?

Our free Active Bystander Training aims to empower parents and carers to have these important conversations, challenge harmful attitudes and lead by example.

It offers practical tools and the confidence to speak up – helping us shape a more respectful future for the next generation.

📅 4 and 11 December (both sessions must be attended).

I know how hard Holly Newton’s mum and stepdad, Micala and Lee, have been campaigning over the years and I am delighted to learn the Government yesterday told the family it plans to introduce a new law defining abusive teenage relationships.

Holly was too young to be recognised as a victim of domestic abuse, and this change is about making sure other young people don’t fall through the gaps.

Teenage relationships can look very different to adult ones - and that needs to be recognised so young people get the protection and support they deserve.

Huge credit to Micala and Lee for everything they have done. Their determination to make change in Holly’s memory is making a real difference and I couldn’t be more pleased for them. 💜 by @northumbriaopcc

People across Northumbria tell me time and again that illegal e-bikes, e-scooters and off-road bikes are making their communities feel less safe. From nuisance and intimidation to serious criminality, this is an issue residents want action on and I am committed to doing all I can to help tackle the problem – as I state in my Police and Crime Plan.

That’s why I’ve written to MPs across Northumbria, urging them to back tougher laws that close loopholes, crack down on unsafe and illegal vehicles, and give police stronger powers to act.

We need to:

✅Tackle illegal conversion kits and unsafe batteries
✅Improve registration and traceability
✅Hold online sellers and delivery companies to account
✅Strengthen police enforcement powers

Our communities have been clear and so I’ve asked MPs to help take this fight to Parliament.

This isn’t about responsible riders. It’s about standing up for local people who are fed up with dangerous riding, anti-social behaviour and criminals exploiting these vehicles. by @northumbriaopcc

Great to join Liz Twist MP for a walkabout in Winlaton today - hearing from residents and businesses about what’s happening in their community.

Really positive conversations and plenty of praise for neighbourhood officers, who know the area inside out and have built strong relationships over years of policing the patch.

Good updates were:

✅ ASB down compared to last year
✅ Prolific offender linked to vehicle crime and shoplifting now serving a 10-month sentence
✅ Problem property linked to crime and disorder closed following police action
✅ 32 nuisance motorbikes seized as part of ongoing enforcement work
✅ Continued work through Op Capio and Project Guardian to tackle issues and support young people
✅Welcome improvements to retail crime reporting processes

Residents were clear there are still issues to tackle, but it was great to hear how visible policing and innovative problem-solving are having a positive impact. @northumbriapol @ by @northumbriaopcc

Come down to the Metrocentre today and check out Northumbria Police’s engagement event! 👮🏽

Loads to see, including police vehicles, some very cute police dogs and even a TARDIS?!

The Chief Constable, along with officers, staff and our brilliant cadets were all busy showcasing the huge range of roles across Northumbria Police, sharing digital ways to report crime, and talking about everything from roads policing to tackling knife crime.

The event is on all day, so if you’re in the area, pop along and say hello.

A fantastic bit of engagement from
Northumbria Police and great for all the family.

Creating safer streets and stronger communities is at the heart of my Police and Crime Plan, which sets out what matters most to local residents and businesses.

That’s why I welcome the Government’s investment in 3 key areas that align with the work we are already doing, while providing an opportunity to build on it.

I’m committed to tackling violence against women and girls, and through my office we deliver Active Bystander Training, helping people recognise harmful behaviour and feel more confident to safely intervene.

Our Workplace Domestic Abuse Champions Network is also helping colleagues access support, and for some people, the workplace can be one of the few areas where they feel safe to speak about what they are experiencing, so having that support available is so important.

The Government’s new Misogyny Prevention Fund will help build on this work, with mentoring for young people, further workplace training and campaigns to improve safety, supporting the wider ambition to halve violence against women and girls.

We must keep challenging misogynistic attitudes, educating young people and looking out for each other.

I also know how important it is for our high streets to remain safe and welcoming places. That’s why I continue to work with partners to tackle illicit trade and address issues affecting our town centres, helping protect our communities and support local businesses.

I’ll also continue working with partners to tackle substance misuse and homelessness, which can leave some of our most vulnerable people at risk of harm and exploitation. Ensuring access to the right support is vital in helping people rebuild their lives. by @northumbriaopcc

Working together through the Safer Transport Northumbria Partnership, partners have:

✅Shared intelligence
✅Secured a Criminal Behaviour Order;

❌….and helped bring a man who caused repeated disruption across our public transport network before the courts.

His behaviour, which included repeatedly urinating and defecating on buses, trains and the Metro, caused distress for passengers, disrupted services and left staff dealing with the aftermath.

I’m pleased to see someone responsible for such disgusting and disruptive behaviour brought to justice.

Nobody should have to put up with experiences like this when travelling or going about their job!

This was a great outcome and shows the value of working together to tackle anti-social behaviour, protect passengers and make our public transport network safer and more welcoming for everyone. 👏 by @northumbriaopcc

Good news to support our efforts tackling ASB 👮🏼‍♀️

New Respect Orders have come into force from today, giving police and partners stronger powers to tackle the most persistent anti-social behaviour offenders.

During my Commissioner’s Community Catch Up consultation over the summer, many residents told me how much ASB affects their daily lives. That’s why reducing this behaviour remains a priority in my refreshed Police and Crime Plan.

These new powers will help hold offenders to account while also providing opportunities to address the underlying issues driving their behaviour, helping to prevent reoffending and make our communities safer for everyone. by @northumbriaopcc

I’m really pleased that new Intensive Supervision Courts have started operating in Northumbria this month.

Sitting at South Tyneside and North Tyneside Magistrates’ Courts, they will provide tailored support for women whose offending is often linked to issues such as trauma, addiction and poor mental health.

This is a positive step forward and complements my flagship programme focused on supporting women in the criminal justice system and diverting them away from custody wherever possible.

By tackling the root causes of offending and helping women access the right support at the right time, we can help break the cycle of reoffending, strengthen families and create safer communities across our region.

Thanks to all involved in making this valuable work happen. by @northumbriaopcc

Whether you have been affected by crime – or know someone who has – we want to make sure you get the best support possible.

Today I’d like to highlight the incredible work being done by Sunderland Counselling Service. Founded more than 40 years ago, @sunderland_counselling provides a range of mental health services, including NHS Talking Therapies for anxiety and depression, as well as specialist support for survivors of sexual abuse.

During a visit there last week, I spoke with staff about the vital work they do to support survivors and improve mental health across our communities.

I know the impact of sexual abuse can be long-lasting and have severe effects on survivors’ mental health, wellbeing and confidence for many years. That is why it is so important that people have access to specialist, trauma-informed support when they need it.

Our office contributes funding towards their delivery of the Counselling Adult Survivors of Sexual Violence and Abuse (CASSVA) service, supporting adults in Sunderland, male survivors aged 16 and over across the Northumbria force area, and adults with learning disabilities. They also provide the Reach service for anyone aged 16 and over who has experienced sexual abuse within the last 12 months.

We also have a Victims Services Directory on our website to help you find the right support that best meets your needs: https://northumbria-pcc.gov.uk/commissioning-victims-support/help-for-victims/victims-services-directory-full-list/ by @northumbriaopcc
