Thirty years old. It’s crazy how good and sweet life can be, and also how dark and scary it can be.

I’ve learned so much in the past three decades, and I’m grateful to be where I am in life even if it’s not really what I expected.

One of the most important things I’ve learned is to try to not let my expectations take away from my experiences. I try to give myself to the experiences and life I have, instead of wishing it was something else.

We all have an idea of what a ‘normal’ or a ‘good’ life looks like. If our life doesn’t match that idea/expectation, it can be painful—it can make us think something is wrong with us.

In an attempt to fix this we may try to change ourselves into people we admire, who we look up to. It’s not bad to improve our behaviors and habits, but sometimes we attempt to change our wills and twist our souls to fit the mold of someone else’s life. This does not bring peace.

It can be scary, but if we accept our life and try to make decisions based on what we feel to be right, we can live a life that is meaningful and exciting and good, but unlike anyone else’s life that we know of.

That’s what I try to tell myself, that my life doesn’t have to be exactly what I expected it to be. If I am honest enough with myself to learn what I want, humble enough to fail on my way to achieving it, and brave enough to do it even if others don’t see the value in it, then wherever my life takes me it will be better than anything I could have expected.
