23 years ago, Britney Spears & Madonna released “Me Against The Music” as the lead single for “In The Zone”.

Released October 14, 2003, “Me Against The Music” became the first single to credit Madonna as a featured artist in her 20-year career. Produced by Tricky Stewart and Penelope Magnet, during the rehearsals for the MTV VMAs 2003, Spears played the song to Madonna and asked her to collaborate. Lyrically, the song talks about battling the music and the pleasures of letting go on the Dancefloor.

The song received generally mixed reviews from music critics, some calling it a strong song while others saying it felt lackluster. Commercially, “Me Against The Music” peaked at number 35 on the Billboard Hot 100. Globally, however, the song peaked in the top 10 in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Europe, Finland, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Norway, Romania, Scotland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK. The song won “Hot Dance Single of the Year” at the Billboard Music Awards 2004.

The music video, directed by Paul Hunter, shows Madonna and Britney playing opposites in a nightclub. The video received positive reviews from critics, who noted the symbolic of the sexual roles between the women. The music video was nominated for Best Female Video and Best Collaboration at the MTV Video Music Awards Japan in 2004. taken in ICONIC by @nostalgiabarbie

On this day, 18 years ago, @beyonce released “If I Were a Boy” from her third studio album titled I Am… Sasha Fierce (2008) ❤️‍🩹

“If I Were a Boy” is a song written by BC Jean and Toby Gad and originally performed by Jean in 2008. Inspired by the difficult break-up of a romantic relationship, the song was initially recorded by Jean, whose record company rejected it. Beyoncé then recorded her own version. Jean was upset when she learned that Beyoncé was releasing it as a single, but eventually, they reached an agreement.

Columbia Records released “If I Were a Boy” to US radio as a double A-side single alongside “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” as the lead singles. The two songs showcased the contrast between Beyoncé’s personality and her aggressive onstage persona, Sasha Fierce. “If I Were a Boy” peaked at number three on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and earned multi-platinum certifications in Australia, Canada, and the US, as well as a diamond one in Brazil. It was the third-bestselling song in 2009 in Brazil. taken in 𝟮𝟬𝟬𝟴 by @nostalgiabarbie
