When Marlon Brando won the Academy Award for The Godfather in 1973, he declined as a protest against how Native Americans had been portrayed in American cinema over the years.

He sent Sacheen Littlefeather as his representative. Years later it was revealed that Littlefeather’s real name was Maria Louise Cruz and she was Hispanic, not Native American. Her speech, however, did bring attention to how Native Americans were portrayed and a situation at Wounded Knee, South Dakota where 200 Oglala Lakota(sometimes referred to as Oglala Sioux) and followers of the American Indian Movement (AIM) seized and occupied the town.

Brando later spoke about sending Sacheen and the fall out with Dick Cavett.

Say what you want about her, but Bette Davis sure had a lot of different looks over the years - from blond in her younger years to brunette in her later years.

The Quiet Man featured some of the most beautiful views. Starring Maureen O’Hara and John Wayne it was shot on location in Ireland and directed by John Ford.

It was released in 1952 and remains a beloved classic. If you haven’t seen the movie - first, where have you been? 😉 And second, it is the story of a former American boxer who moves back to his family’s land in Ireland and meets a headstrong Irish woman who he falls in love with.

There is so much more to the story - pride, Irish culture, family relations, what Maureen’s character thinks it means to be a man…. There is something for everyone in this film and it’s all wrapped up in a good amount of humor too.

Dean Martin was born Dino Paul Crocetti on June 7, 1917 in Ohio.
Many of us know him for his smooth singing (which used to help my babies fall asleep) on 35 studio albums, and might forget he was also an actor who starred in such films as Oceans 11, Rio Bravo, and Bells Are Ringing.

Really, though, how could we forget that he started his career as a comedy duo with Jerry Lewis - Martin and Lewis - in 1946. For years they performed together on stage, TV, and then in movies.
The pair separated in 1956 and Dean started a solo career, eventually joining the Rat Pack with Frank Sinatra, Peter Lawford, Sammy Davis, Jr., and Joey Bishop.
He also hosted The Dean Martin Show and The Dean Martin Roasts. (If I share any clips from them I might get banned from Facebook!)

Some might not realize that My Fair Lady is based in George Bernard Shaw’s play Pygmalion.
This clip is from the 1938 movie adaptation of the play. The movie starred Leslie Howard as Professor Henry Higgins and Wendy Hiller as Eliza Doolittle.
The main difference between it and My Fair Lady is that My Fair Lady was a musical.
Have you ever seen Pygmalion?

Do you remember this show?

James Garner starred as Bret Maverick for three seasons (1957 to 1960) on the show Maverick.

He eventually left due to a contract dispute and was replaced by Jack Kelly as his brother Bart and later Roger Moore as Beau Maverick. Robert Colbert was hired to play Brent Maverick when ratings started to fall and some said he looked like Garner.

In the end, many probably remember Garner in the role more than anyone else and probably remember Roger Moore as James Bond more than a Maverick.

Bette Davis made three films with William Wyler and each one shot her further into the stardom stratosphere.
Those movies were Jezebel, (1938), The Letter (1940) and The Little Foxes (1941).
Here she is thanking him as she accepts The Life Achievement Award from the American Film Institute.

I love the 1940 movie The Shop Around the Corner starring Jimmy Stewart and Margaret Sullavan.

The movie was based on the 1936 Hungarian play Parfumerie. The 1998 movie You’ve Got Mail, which starred Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks, was based on that play as well, but also on this movie.

Personally, I prefer The Shop Around the Corner to You’ve Got Mail.

Have you seen this one? What did you think? #oldmovies #oldhollywoodstars #jimmystewart by @nostalgically_thinking

I love The Shop Around the Corner (1940) with Jimmy Stewart and Margaret Sullivan.

The funny thing about the movie is that it is supposed to take place in Hungary but almost everyone has a New York/American accent.

This was a bit of a goofy movie with a couple of serious themes mixed in. It features wonderful bantering between Stewart and Sullivan and some really great acting from Stewart, especially.

According to TCM: “James Stewart and Margaret Sullavan had known each other a long time before making The Shop Around the Corner. Both were in a summer stock company called the University Players. It was there that Stewart realized his potential as an actor, so he followed Sullavan and fellow player Henry Fonda to New York to begin an acting career in earnest.

Even though Margaret Sullavan was infamous for her quick temper and disdainful attitude towards Hollywood, James Stewart counted working with her as one of the great joys of his professional career. And because he knew her personally, he was more equipped than most of the cast and crew members to deal with her frequent and volatile emotional outbursts.”

I also loved this tidbit that TCM shared: “Stewart said: “We were in this little restaurant and I had the line: ‘I will come out on the street and I will roll my trousers up to my knees.’ For some reason, I couldn’t say it. She was furious. She said, ‘This is absolutely ridiculous.’ There I was standing with my trousers rolled up to my knees, very conscious of my skinny legs, and I said, ‘I don’t want to act today; get a fellow with decent legs and just show them.’ Margaret said, ‘Then I absolutely refuse to do the picture.’ So we did more takes.”

Here we are on Agatha Christie’s birthday and I am posting a rare interview of her in Lisbon Portugal in the 1960s. I have posted this before, but wanted to post it again for today.

I don’t have an exact date on this one but still think it is very interesting to see and hear her at the same time. I have not seen any other on camera interview with her. There may be other others. I’m just not aware of them.

Agatha was traveling in Lisbon, Portugal with her husband Max Mallowan when she was interviewed by Arthur Varatojo.

During the interview, she spoke about her characters, Miss Marple, and Hercule Poirot.

Did you know that Max was actually 14 years younger than Agatha? Looking at them here I would never have known that.
