“tl:dr, I just feel as though there’s a lack of sincerity in the world these days” - Ethel Cain @mothercain

2 years ago, Ethel Cain’s comments on the prevalence of irony hit home for many. It touched on a growing sentiment; a wider online cultural shift away from the ironic detachment and cynicism that dominated the mid-latter half of the 2010s and towards something far more earnest.

Today, Internet Music is following the very same arc.

We’re calling it Internet Music’s Sincerity Arc — or New New Sincerity (a play on the New Sincerity movement popular in the 1990s).

Interestingly enough, the sincerity arc isn’t limited to genre, as its prevalence is found across artists spanning alternative pop, underground rap, indietronica, ‘girl-edm’, left-field rnb and more.

Artists like @ninajirachi, @underscores , @hektttt , @agirlthatdoesntexist_ , @__ear_ , @oklou_ , @ideasforconversations , @tiffdidwhat , @erikadecasier , even @2hollis and @1lilshine - all of whom grew up on the internet we’ve come to love (and hate) today.

This isn’t to say that Internet Music was purely driven by ironic detachment (there’s plenty of nuance to dive into there, which we will in our Substack) but the sincerity is much more palpable now.

We’ll make a post next week about our substack.

See you then.

Cultural colonization is the systematic imposition of a group’s cultural framework or identity (typically 🇺🇸/🇪🇺) over others. Today, the Internet has given way to a new mode of delivery for cultural colonization.

dcye.mp4 is a series where we present music outside or in direct opposition of that hegemony.

I’m doing a sub-series on Mexico, where I’m from.

Let’s dive into the experimental electronic music scene in Mexico, including club music, ambient/drone, and modern reinterpretations on cumbia alike.

This is the story of Brazilian Phonk.

One of looksmaxxers, aura edits, online incels, Clavicular, anonymous producers, the black-pill, money, and surprisingly little about Brazil.

The westernized term “Desert Blues” is a little reductive.

Artists from Mali, Niger, Algeria and more have created a genre of music that is inseparable from the struggle and resistance of the Tuareg people, and it’s called Tishoumaren.

Comment “it’s not desert blues” for the playlist.

The mid 2010s were a great time for music.

They were also a terrible time for music.

Today, we’re talking about Tropical House, aka Expatcore, aka, the sound of gentrified house music.

It’s wild to think about how much house music has changed over the years. The question on my mind:

How did a sound that defined liberation and resistance become digital nomad slop?

We’re taking a dive into the story. From deep houses’s origins of Chicago in the 80’s, through its massive changes in the 2000’s up until the definitive commercial era with 2010s hits like Wavez, I Took A Pill In Ibiza, Shape Of You, Firestone and more.

Substack coming soon :)

Thank you so much 600k views on this, 400k on my video covering Singeli, and for almost 30k followers on Decolonize Your Ears 🫶

It’s my goal to do this for a living.

Forget westerners ‘chinamaxxing’.

There’s a generation of Chinese young people that grew up online and absorbed western culture only via the cracks in China’s Great Firewall, who are now making art about being young, Chinese, alienated, romantic, ambitious, hopeless and much more.

Today, we’re covering one of the most captivating and innovative scenes in the world: China’s Underground Music Scene🇨🇳

Shoutouts to: @zeyiwrites @_glassmuseum @ginsengmuseum @foreignerhat @rveremagazine @dazed and @dazedchina

Check out the artists: @r1r1r1ot @bloodzboi jackzebra @isolyves @eden2001s @billionhappy @hey_turn_it_off @_shushu_chiu_ (and many many more)

I want to talk about how Chinese being a tonal language affects its lyrics, more of my favorite artists in this scene of the Chinese udg, and the different scenes across different Chinese cities.

Comment ‘Chinese Underground’ to subscribe to my substack where I’ll be launching that piece.

Today, we’re talking about Four Tet’s album: ʅ͡͡͡͡͡͡͡͡͡͡͡(̸̢̛̼̞̭͋ͅ)̸͚̰͛̔̾̀̿͒͂:̴͓̞̑̌̂̆̊͋̀:̸͎̟̯̂̓̌ ҉ ͡ ͞ ͞ ͞ ҉● ࿀ ● ࿀ ● ҉⃝ ⃝͢ ͞ ͘ ͞⃝̕ ͢ ̛ ⃝ ̸ ̡ ͢⃝̧ ͡ ͡ ̀ ̧ ̢⃝͜ ҉ ͞ ͞ ⃝͞ ͘ ͞ ͡⃝ ⃝҉҈҉҈҉҈҉҈҉҈҉ :̶̢͙͙͕̠̩͆(̷̮͍͚̫͚͂̍)̵̳̗̊( ̟̞̝̜̙̘̗̖҉̵̴̨̧̢̡̼̻̺̹̳̲̱̰̯̮̭̬̫̪̩̦̥̤̣̠҈͈͇͉͍͎͓͔͕͖͙͚͜͢͢͢͢͢͢͢͢͢͢͢͢͢͢ͅ l̡̡̡ ̡͌ Ɵʅ͡͡͡͡͡͡͡͡͡͡͡(̸

…and other emerging electronic artists and music that’s intentionally keeping itself obscured.

We think the lineage comes from the rave and the early electronic music scenes, where keeping the locations of parties and the names of DJ’s and artists obscured was an important part of how the scene protected itself.

Shoutout to @aguspanzoni and @arnii.wav, go watch both their videos on ‘Rave Simulacra’!

But tbh, by now if we’re talking about it, I’m sure the deep underground has probably moved on to even more hidden and more interesting ways of keeping their music gate kept.

For now, let’s talk about Anti-Search.

Singeli is many, many things.

It’s been called ‘art borne from lack’ by BBC News Africa, the ‘hyperpop’ of Tanzania, and the future of afrofuturism…

Karen Chalamilla wrote that “Singeli has not always been legible or accepted in mainstream Tanzanian media, so it is tempting to think of Singeli as a counterculture…[but] Singeli is not necessarily resisting hegemony; it is instead a response of working-class youth to their living conditions. The way the genre sets itself apart is not by resistance, but by a strategy of creation.”

But one things for sure: it’s fast, it’s frenetic, and it’s very, very fun.

Today, we’re covering Singeli.

Comment “I LOVE SINGELI” for the playlist.

Today, we’re talking about the underground.

More specifically, we’re answering the question on everyone’s minds: what does “underground” actually mean anymore?

Let’s explore the history of the underground rap world and how the widening umbrella of artists, big and small, that form “underground rap” are shaping music across the world—

and potentially reinventing how we see genres completely.

I went down a YouTube rabbit hole (again) and found more great music.

My @youtube homepage will, from time to time, present me with a seemingly random video from artists I’ve never heard before and I’ve learned that I should always click on it since most of the music is great.

This is my way of sharing those finds y’all.

See you next time.
