Although I don’t follow Gridlife Touring Car or GLGT as I do with Time Attack, I’d be remised not to include my personal favorite car on the GLGT grid. It’s always a pleasure watching Lotus’ on track, rare as it may be. Just watching them battle up positions is an underdog fantasy you don’t often get in grassroots motorsport. This particular Exige from @trackspecautosports isn’t too far off stock form exterior wise aside from a simple aero package, and internally an ever-desirable K24 swap.

Optimal pace put it well within times of its V8 and Inline 6 peers, with a fastest time of 1:36.932.

With the popularity of the Supra platform rising in US Time Attack, it’s hard to ignore the recent dominance from @_isaactorress_ this year. Back to back P1’s at GTA Thunderhill in May, the Ridge in August and now @gridlifeofficial Laguna, this has been a standout year not only for the chassis but also for a talented young driver in the sport.

Day 1 of the weekend saw Isaac break the class record for Street Mod with a 1:29.830, the first time a competitor in that class has gone sub 1:30. As the weekend went on, more time was found ending in a 1:29.361, breaking the record again and solidifying P1 for the event.

All eyes are now @globaltimeattack Finals as multiple drivers gun for their final podium of the season.

Not many cars were as popular to watch or cheered for the most as @eric_kutil_racing was piloting his Super Touring EG Civic sedan. In true underdog fashion, a sea of E46’s all eyeing P1 were really the only thing between him and his first win at Laguna.

Being his first time driving this track in GLTC, you would expect inconsistent times, placements and a weekend overall spent learning more than competing. Yet, somehow every race result ended in P2, a testament to the consistency of both car and driver.

Unfortunately, the E46 chassis continues to gain popularity in the class, with a dominant showing from @t_rods2k all weekend.

Nonetheless, a great weekend for Eric and looking forward to seeing the Civic again.

The consistency @pronto.zn8 has had since first crossing paths with him at Buttonwillow last year is a testament to how important ongoing chassis and suspension development can be when competing at the top levels of Time Attack.

With the GR chassis still being fairly fresh compared to the rest of the competition, it’s impressive to see Jared go toe to toe with the more developed previous generation 86’s who’ve had much more time to hone in their setups. Development help from @southwave.as has made the car consistently competitive between GridLife, SCCA, and GR86 Cup, where rule changes across the 3 call for differing amounts of setup changes.

A 1:39.646 places him 3rd on podium for @gridlifeofficial ClubTR with lots of momentum heading into GTA Finals at Buttonwillow in November.

Day 2 at Gridlife Laguna and we’re all in on @bossbossracing and @socaldriversclub in the GL Time Attack competition.

After a blown motor at the Ridge, Mike went all in on a new motor to make it to Laguna and with the recent @zebulon_motorsport aero package, the Supra ends Saturday with a 1:32.6. Just shy of P2 by 1 second and podium for Street Mod is all SDC, so Sunday should see some fun competition between the team.

Hoping to see this clinch a P1 by the end of the event with good momentum heading into GTA Finals.

While I’ve primarily focused on covering the time attack cars around SoCal, it’s good to switch things up every now and then. I ran into @garagehotcar while at Streets earlier in the month for the SDC event and finally got to see his S13 in person.

S-chassis’ might be a dime a dozen but few really hit all the right points like this one. Livery, wheel choice, body kit… everything just flows, paying homage to the best era of drifting. Style and individuality is something I’ve come to really appreciate when it comes to the types of cars I want to shoot, and this only continues to solidify that point. Hopefully that level of style bleeds into our local time attack builds at some point.

Ending off my impromptu three part coverage of the @bossbossracing Supra with the recent SDC x BigTime track day. With this being a shakedown for @globaltimeattack Thunderhill the week after, I was eager to see how the car would perform with all the new additions, namely an upgraded transmission allowing the car to run 5th and 6th gear at peak power.

Since I won’t be making it out to the Ridge, the next time we see this car on track is most likely Gridlife Laguna, hopefully with even more updates leading all the way up to Finals.

The much anticipated livery reveal for the @bossbossracing Supra debuted last weekend. In collaboration with @garagehotcar, the Supra now sports an homage livery to the D1GP era we all know and love.

More excitingly, we’ll see the car turn laps at @socaldriversclub x @bigtimebigtimebigtimebigtime track day tomorrow as a sneak peek to the upcoming time attack season. Plenty more Supra coverage in the weeks to come, and hopefully a good dose of other time attack cars mixed in.

Stopped over at @race.service this past Friday for the only moment to see the liveryless @bossbossracing Supra. I have a love for big aero cars with no livery, from factory cup cars to the simplistic designs from Esprit, white body with black aero always seals the deal.

Sadly this iteration is short lived ahead of a new livery for the season, but I think we can all agree it hits the right notes combined with the silver TA-6R’s from @socaldriversclub. Excited to see what the next livery is going to look like, hopefully soon….

I’ve quietly seen a growing number of BMW’s take over the track scene as I’ve photographed time attack these last few years. It’s surprising it didn’t happen earlier, as even out the box, the F8x is a more than capable platform.

Wouldn’t be a stretch to say the ASSIST M4 from Japan was a big inspiration in how these cars are seen and set up. Tack on the fact that the chassis is great, GT4 programs are still going with parts readily available, and a large amount of tuning support, the choice for this platform to be competitive is rather modest (comparatively).

Underdog would be a good word to use when looking at an IS350 battle it out on track against the usual suspects; BMW’s, GR86’s, Miatas, etc. Engineering an unconventional platform isn’t easy, but it sure is respectable to see and rewarding to watch in action.

@giraldo.racing struck a good balance of aesthetics without taking away from the original Lexus design, something I personally loved from its era. While I didn’t get to delve into this particular build last season, I’m eager to see more of it when GTA rolls back around this season.
