Notebook no. 1– a place to jot down notes, make a mess, make sense of the squiggly lines inside my mind (so very squiggly). A place to keep a diary. This past summer I went through note after note, page after page that my maternal grandmother kept. She was a known hoarder of documents, such as holy cards, flyers, newspaper clippings that held stories featuring family members, as well as birthday cards, cards of any occasion and of course her diary pages. She kept a record of things; of life lived. She noticed what went on around her— who brought home a new baby and how much it weighed, what she wore to certain celebrations, when icicles fell on the heads of people she cared about (this happened more than you’d think). I was never close to my grandmother, Bonnie, but I do so love and appreciate her knack for keeping such records. I wonder what she made of all this history unfolding. I wonder what she thought. Ever since childhood I’ve had my own knack for writing down my ideas, discoveries, woes. Writing is quite useful for finding out how you feel. And I feel so much. So here will be my space for keeping record, finding out how I feel and perhaps even taking note about the state of icicles and whether they targeted anyone I know. I have always had a thing for writing as well as a reluctant approach to sharing my words. But share I will. Through this notebook.
