‘West of the Sun’
My first study for a larger painting of our idealised and immaculate sunsets on the west coast.
When experienced so often the sunsets can slip from awe, but every so often you have that one sunset sooooo spectacular that even the locals stop and comment on the beauty of it.

Also influenced by Murakami’s South of the Border, West of the Sun which explores how constant beauty dulls perception.

Palm 29:9

29 Palms, Barbados
Oil & Gouache on canvas
9” x 12”

29 Palms Barbados connects two very dear and yet different landscapes for me through the same familiar tree.

In Barbados the palm is a familiar icon representing island life; however in California’s 29 Palms, it’s a solitary marker against vast, unforgiving landscapes.

These 29 paintings sit between those 2 places. The same icon carrying two different meanings.
