"I am trying to render the special quality of this hallucination..." R. Barthes

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Welcome to the IG edition of Notes On Photography, a Tumblr site I started more than forty books ago (so far), gathering writings on photography - passages gleaned from books - that somehow try to capture the essence of photography, the riddles that are photographs and the effect they have on us and our societies.

(Even though the tumblr site is quite a bit ahead as far as number of books annotated, it's slowly being ammended as this IG version slowly catches up with the more "accurate" paired images .)

I want to stress that it is the words here that are more important than the images. In a sense, the photographs, often obliquely, support the writings rather than the other way around - as is the case usually - or in the very least they are on equal footing. Either way, I hope they will (besides picking up the actual books) encourage you to look at images more closely on other platforms, ideally in photobooks, and much like a music album, allow and give them the time and the rhythm they deserve to be looked at. Even if it took a fraction of a second to create them, it has taken years of observing and seeing to hone a certain vision, and we can respect this by looking closely, beyond merely as thumbnail images on Instagram.

I plan to continue this as long as I can, and if I do stop, it will not be for the lack of material, as the amount of literature on this subject is overwhelming, increasing exponentially as we try to make sense of a world that slowly reconstructs itself into its doppelgänger - that of one vast mirage.

I can’t say it better than the descriptor by Roland Barthes
“I am trying to render the special quality of this hallucination."

My guide to the realms of The Uncanny. Make a copy, fold it in four and stick it in your back pocket. It might come in handy one day.

I'm available to work on presentations to pitch ideas for exhibitions, films, games, music videos, animations, etc...

My background is visual development/concept art for entertainment design (mostly working in visual effects).

I work with images in the areas of art, design, fashion, science, etc...everything and anything that surrounds us. (My particular interest lies in the weird, ambiguous, and uncanny)

If you have an idea which you'd like to pitch, I may be the person who can help you put a presentation together.

In the meantime, thanks for following, more notes to come...

Cheers!

The notes have been coming in a bit slow and will continue at a glacial pace hopefully for only a bit more, but I'm glad to see new followers stumbling across this very modest account once in a while; this is as close as I'll get to being a leader of a cult.

In the meantime, with the amount of images I wade through daily, its inevitable that one starts seeing echoes like the above, which I've been posting on stories (and on the tumblr site) and will continue to do so before hopefully getting back on track with more consistent notes. I've also started adding to the highlights section with larger collections.

Why? It's an itch I have to scratch...and didn’t you hear? Curation is the new creation.

Anyway, if you like this kind of stuff, I'd highly recommend following @patrick_pound if you already don't. He's the real deal.

You can go back to whatever it was you were doing now.

If my memory serves me right, in the documentary "In No Great Hurry", about the life and work of Saul Leiter, we learn that he was a great admirer of the work of Pierre Bonnard. If so, I hope to think that when he came across this moment, his heart skipped a beat, his mind jumped to this painting, and his brain ordered to lift and shoot his camera before she finished writing that letter...

Martin Parr

1952-2025

“…if you give sad and depressing stories to the world, I really have the feeling that no one is going to listen to you. That’s why I like my pictures to be bright and colourful and, I hope, acceptable. Because I want to include my audience. I don’t want to piss them off. I want to draw them in and then there is more to be read when you are more inclined. But I would never expect my photography to change anything…”

"…reality has come to seem more and more like what we are shown by cameras. It is common now for people to insist about their experience of a violent event in which they were caught up - a plane crash, a shoot out, a terrorist bombing - that ‘it seemed like a movie’."

"Few people in this society share the primitive dread of cameras that comes from thinking of the photograph as a material part of themselves. But some trace of the magic remains: for example, in our reluctance to tear up or throw away the photograph of a loved one, especially of someone dead or far away. To do so is a ruthless gesture of rejection."

"The primitive notion of the efficacy of images presumes that images possess the qualities of real things, but our inclination is to attribute to real things the qualities of an image."

"Our irrepressible feeling that the photographic process is something magical has a genuine basis […] a photograph is not only like its subject, a homage to the subject. It is part of, an extension of that subject, and a potent means of acquiring it, of gaining control over it."
