With this year's incredible double periodical cicada emergence en mass, I thought I'd post this shot I took last year of an annual cicada leaving its juvenile exoskeleton behind and becoming a fully formed, mature adult ready to mingle.Fun fact I recently learned about periodical cicadas; the strictly north American genus Magicicada with only 7 species sync up their adult metamorphoses, emerging from years of growing and living safely underground to mate in numbers. The reproductive benefits of this synced mating congregation greatly outnumber the loss due to predation. Now here's the absolutely mind blowing part, you may wonder why although there are 7 species, why are they synchronized to either 13 or 17 years only? Because 13 and 17 are prime numbers and any potential specialist predators with a life cycle of 2 or more years can't possibly sync up with their own timed life cycle. And any populations that happen to exist will probably die out during the decade plus the cicadas spend underground.
