How do creative firms stay adaptable in a rapidly changing world? And in an era of AI, algorithms, and endless content, what actually makes people connect?

Those were some of the questions driving conversations at this year's Leadership Summit.

Across two days in New York, members and partners explored the ideas reshaping the design industry right now—from the rise of “Dubaiami” architecture and algorithm-based culture to new media, collaboration, leadership, and the growing value of originality and community.

The program moved between behind-the-scenes visits and larger conversations, including tours of Miriam Ellner’s (@miriamellner) New York studio, in partnership with Homo Farber (@homofaber), and the Nassau Street Sky House with SilverLining (@silverlining_inc) and David Hotson (@davidhotson_architect), where inventive residential design became a jumping-off point for bigger discussions about creativity, risk-taking, and point of view.

One idea surfaced again and again: Beautiful things matter, but so do the relationships around them. In a moment defined by speed and technological change, the ability to think deeply, adapt quickly, and stay connected may matter most of all.

Amaza Lee Meredith is a mid-20th century African American female architect who’s social impact and depth of work we were not familiar with. As Virginia State University was in the process of preserving and restoring Azurest South, a building which Amaza Lee designed, Benjamin Moore and the National Trust for Historic Preservation came to us looking to document the preservation of the building and highlight Amaza Lee’s impact on design and African American culture.

Virginia State was moving quickly to save the building which meant that we needed to get up to speed and get a team on the ground as soon as possible. Even though we were on a tight timeline we took a few days to dive in to Amaza Lee’s work, and speak with the experts who were leading the effort to recognize and restore Azurest South. Over the years we’ve found it’s very difficult to try document a subject with zero knowledge. You just don’t know where to start or what questions to ask. But by creating a little time for discovery and preproduction calls with the people at the heart of the project, we’re able to quickly create a production bible that serves as a base knowledge starting point for our team.

As we celebrate Women’s History Month, we find ourselves drawn back to Amaza Lee. What we learned about her work was an inspiration to us. She was a trailblazer and dedicated practitioner in her field while also being a beacon of knowledge for aspiring architects through her years of teaching at Virginia State. Azurest South stands as a landmark of African American culture, showcasing Amaza Lee’s bold design and leadership as an architect who was also an LGBTQIA+ woman of color in the early 20th century.

Benjamin Moore asked us to come up with a creative pitch for the launch of the new formula of their flagship interior line Regal Select. We immediately knew we wanted to create a spot that captured the pride and joy of living in a beautifully durable home.

Casting plays a vital role in the believability of a commercial. Finding an entire family with camera experience is very challenging. It’s much easier to cast each family member separately. But for us, it was extremely important that the family had genuine chemistry and comfortability.

Taking the time for an extensive casting search allowed us to find an adorable family full of actors. In the spot, their energy and inherent familial bond comes through effortlessly. And that relationship allowed director Shawn Willis to maximize his day without needing to take time to find the performances.

The end result is a video that truly embodies warmth, joy and authenticity, showcasing the key features and essence of Benjamin Moore’s incredible product.

We were contracted to create a series of music videos for Concord Music. Each video needed to tell a story that was unique to the song, have an economical shoot schedule, film in one location and have a quick turnaround.

This music video featuring Ariana Debose, winner of the Best Supporting Oscar Award for West Side Story, is a contemporary take on the Rodgers and Hammerstein song, “Shall We Dance” from the classic musical The King and I.

For this production, we found a single location that we could get multiple looks out of. With no time for a camera rehearsal, we filmed these intricate dance sequences, choreographed by the extremely talented Julius Anthony Rubio, within a few hours.

Streamlined collaboration between departments allowed us to be nimble and get the most out of our shoot day. And our post production team turned in a first cut that was incredibly dynamic, which meant we were able to finish faster and beat a tight deadline.

Benjamin Moore came to us looking to create a video around The Alpha Workshops. The ask was unique because they didn’t want the video to feel like a Benjamin Moore video. The video needed to reflect the delicate work, passion and mission of The Alpha Workshops. It was an interesting position for us because we were ostensibly creating a video for one client that was about a different client.

We started by diving in to The Alpha Workshops and what they do. We got to know their products, their process and, most importantly, the artisans that craft the wallpaper. We were blown away by the talent and craftsmanship of the team.

Once we discovered the elements that make the studio thrive, the creative fell in line. At which point we could articulate the goal and breadth of the shoot to all the stakeholders involved. That clarity allowed us to execute a well thought out shooting plan and to also stay nimble on the day.

This video is a team favorite and we’re grateful to The Alpha Workshop’s for opening their doors and hearts to us.
