When I tidepool, I’m usually singing the song I have stuck in my head out loud, for all the #nudibranchs to hear. Despite their name, these cute lil brooding anemones sure seemed happy to be living in a part of the planet deemed a National Monument, meaning it is protected by the hardworking people at the National Park Service. And this lil guy in particular wanted to thank the @nationalparkservice for slaying at the @cabrillonps in #sandiego (anemones are so hip these days).

Beaches are not just places for us to enjoy.

In my opinion, the cutest creature scurrying around the sand goes to the snowy plover. Just as we spruce up before a first date 💄 🪞 🪒, many birds have feathers that change to signal when they are ready to breed (maybe they are just meeting the parents?). This lil plover is sending the signal with the black patch behind its eye.

Unfortunately, our presence was very apparent on that same beach. It showed in the forms of endless trash and water that is so toxic from human sewage it is closed most of the year. This has created a whole host of problems for all living beings in the area, near and far.

When no adjustments are needed because your subject, aka #anemone, is already dressed to rave.

This green anemone’s flowing tentacles are filled with microscopic stinging structures (not harmful to humans), as well as, symbiotic algae.

It had been weeks, even months, since my last spotting. As I drove along the coast, on my way home from work, I felt a calling to pull over. I observed the low tide and scanned the exposed algae-covered rocks, thinking to myself, “Is it worth the knee pain today?” Well my friends, it was. Just when you’ve given up hope you can count on an ol’ sea lemon to restore your faith in nudibranchs.

So when life gives you lemons, you…carefully observe them and try to take pictures with your #iphone. Until next time, that’s #notionsoftheocean.
