My grandmother was unafraid to tell me the hard truths. She had a brilliant way of making me simultaneously chuckle, feel loved, and feel called out. It was the best medicine, and she administered it with graceful tact. And she never made me feel like a burden.

I’ve been sitting with whether or not to share this publicly, because, honestly, this is uncomfortable for me.

Earlier this year, I was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (Level 1).

ADHD and OCD aren’t new diagnoses for me. I’ve known about those since I was very young, and they’ve been part of my understanding of myself for most of my life. Autism is the new piece.

Having this diagnosis has caused me to look back at a lot of my life differently – the way I process information, communicate, experience sensory input, navigate social situations, become intensely absorbed in things, get overwhelmed, and move through the world.

Some things that have felt difficult to explain suddenly have additional context.

And I think about that little boy a lot.

I grew up with an alcoholic and abusive mother, a father who was hardly ever around, and an older brother who was sent to prison for virtually the rest of his life. There was a lot of instability, confusion, and pain around me, and I was trying to make sense of it all while also trying to make sense of myself.

I didn’t have the language for any of this then. Looking back now, I feel profoundly sad for that little boy. Not because I wish I were someone else, or because this diagnosis explains everything – it doesn’t. But because I can finally look back at him with some of the understanding and compassion he didn’t have for himself.

I’ve hesitated to share this because I’ve always had a complicated reaction to diagnoses and “neurodivergence” becoming part of an artist’s identity. I don’t want this to be that.

I’m not sharing it as an excuse for anything I’ve done, or as a preemptive explanation for anything I might do. I’m sharing it because I think the people in my life deserve some of the context that I now have about myself.

Maybe it will help explain some things. Maybe it won’t. I’m still figuring out what this means, and I’m sure I will be for a long time.

I don’t have a neat conclusion to offer here – just a desire to understand myself – and hopefully be understood by the people I love.

And, perhaps most of all, a little more compassion for the person I was before I had the words for any of this. by @notmarkmarc
