Every October, New Mexico gives me something to come back to.

Not just the balloons, but the rituals around them.
The early alarms. The Tom Thumb donuts. The piñon coffee. The breakfast burritos. The warmth of the burners. The friends who come home. The people you get to bring for the first time.

I’ve seen Balloon Fiesta more times than I can count, and somehow it never loses its magic. If anything, it means even more now — because part of the beauty is getting to watch someone else experience it too.

I love this place. I love these traditions. I love New Mexico. taken in Albuquerque, New Mexico by @notuhcowboy

The balloons weren’t even the best part.

I got home from shooting a wedding around 12:30am. At 4:30, my alarm went off because my best friend Brandon had decided the day before that we were absolutely going to watch Balloon Fiesta from paddleboards on the Rio Grande.

I have genuinely never seen this man more excited about an idea. 😂

So there we were in the dark, headlamps on, coffee he had made for us in hand, pumping up paddleboards and having a brief moment of, wait… are we really getting in this river right now?

We did.

By seven, the bosque was waking up around us. Birds were flying overhead. The sun was coming through the trees. People lined parts of the river on horses, in lawn chairs, walking their dogs, all waiting for the same thing.

And somewhere in the distance, the balloons started rising.

I remember thinking we needed to paddle faster. We needed to get there. The balloons were waiting for us.

But somewhere along the way Brandon and I kept stopping to say how grateful we were. For this morning. For New Mexico. For being alive. For each other.

And when we finally reached the balloons, it was incredible.

But strangely, it wasn’t my favorite part.

My favorite part was everything before it.

Being barefoot on a paddleboard. The river carrying me forward. My best friend somewhere beside me. Birds above us. The bosque on both sides. Watching the morning slowly become morning.

And it made me realize how often I’m doing the same thing in my own life right now.

I can see things I want in the distance. Love. Partnership. Dreams. Whatever comes next. And sometimes I want to paddle a little faster because I’m excited to get there.

But God, life is good right here.

There is so much I don’t want to accidentally paddle past trying to reach the next beautiful thing.

This was one of those mornings I know I’ll remember when I’m old.

God, I’m alive.

God, I love my friends.

And God, I love New Mexico.

last winter on film.

my cousin asked me to photograph his engagement, so naturally we loaded up the horses and headed into the mountains.
