Collection.
Someone carved a face into the handle of this ladle, a simple object for daily use, given a figure to hold on to. It comes from the Kulango of central Côte d'Ivoire, cut from a dense hardwood and marked with their signs.
Beside it a small Dogon bronze box from Mali, cast with scorpions and used to keep tobacco, a ribbed earthenware vessel from China, and a ceremonial Ifugao bowl from the Philippines, worn smooth from long use.
Dark wood, aged bronze, unglazed clay. Four objects from three continents, each carrying the warmth that comes with age and careful making.

Sealed.
These baskets were made to hold oil. Woven from willow and then sealed with clay, inside and out, they kept a household's cooking oil through the year.
Early 20th century, from rural China, worked entirely by hand. The clay collar around the opening was pressed on last, and it is different on every one. Two of them here, one a little larger than the other.
Woven willow under warm grey-brown clay, cracked at the rim and softened by decades of use. Quietly sculptural, and beautifully worn throughout.
Each was made to work for a lifetime, and each brings that long use into a room.
Available individually — please write to us for details.

Assembled.
Beautiful black clay from Italy, a woven basket from the Philippines and small carved pieces from West and Central Africa, brought together here for the first time.
This one-of-a-kind basket is worked in open hexagonal plaiting: flat strips of split cane run in three directions and cross at roughly sixty degrees, leaving six-sided openings between them. A Philippine study of basketry from 1915 already describes the weave, used across the islands for carrying fish, eggs and laundry. The rim and the tall handle are made from stronger, rounded cane, the joins carefully bound.
In the side light, the weave casts its pattern across the console, a second basket drawn in shadow. Beside it, a small wooden bowl from the Luba of the Democratic Republic of Congo, with a head carved at its handle.
Each piece comes from a different hand and a different place, and each brings its own quiet character to the group.
The objects are available individually. Please write to us for details.

Carried.
Chairs of this kind were made to travel. Light enough to lift with one hand, they were carried on the shoulder, so that a seat went wherever its owner went.
These vintage Baoulé chairs from Côte d’Ivoire date from the early 20th century, each one made from separately carved pieces of dark wood, with a flat seat, a gently curved back and the joints left plainly visible. Five of them here, no two the same height.
Wood worn smooth at the seats, rough at the joints, and beautifully uneven throughout.
Simple, sculptural and full of character.
Each has a quiet presence of its own, and each brings decades of use into a room.
Available individually. Please write to us for details.

Held.
Every one of these was made to hold something. Milk, water, rice wine and grain, carried, poured, stored and handled every day until the surfaces turned smooth.
The carved milk vessel and the water jug come from the Congo, one from the middle of the last century, the other from around 1930. Beside them a beautiful rice wine jar from China, early 20th century, and a jug of the Bashi. The wooden scoop is Toraja, from Sulawesi.
Dark wood, grey clay and a wonderfully deep brown patina. Five objects made in five different places, and they sit together as though they always had.
Each was made to be used every day, and each carries that long use into a room.
Available individually. Please write to us for details.

Stacked.
Three beautiful antique Chinese pots from Shandong province in northern China, made around 1940 and thrown by hand to hold water and oil. Each has a generous, rounded belly and a warm brown glaze running round the rim.
The beige clay has softened wonderfully over eighty years of use, and no two are alike, different in size, and each with its own quiet variation of colour. They stand well alone, sit happily together, and make lovely planters with a smaller pot set inside.

Simple, warm and full of character, the kind of pieces that make a home feel welcoming from the moment they arrive.
Available individually, please write to us for details.

Nine.
Nine remarkable stools, and no two alike. One rests on a carved drum, another is held up by small figures, a third narrows to a waist and opens again. Each was made by a differen hand, and each found its own answer to the simplest of tasks.
Antique African stools of this kind were carved across West Africa, one for each person, and kept for a lifetime.
Warm wood in tones from pale honey to almost black, every surface beautifully worn by years that followed. Simple, sculptural and remarkably varied.
Each of these was made for one person and used for a lifetime. Now they are looking for the next.

Lamplight.
Five lamps that began as something else entirely, old Chinese pots for water and oil, now fitted with hand-sewn linen shades in taupe, beige and black.

Three sizes, five different characters, and together a wonderfully warm group.
Each pot was thrown by hand in northern China, so every one has its own shape and its own quiet variation of colour. These antique table lamps give a light that is gentle and low, and the clay stays dark and matte beside the soft natural linen.
They stand on an old Chinese coffee table, worn beautifully over the years.
A single one is enough to change the mood of a room.
Two together, even more so, the kind of light that makes an evening feel unhurried.

Panel.
Imagine a house covered entirely in carving like this, panel beside panel, each one different, the whole façade alive with spirals. That is how the Toraja of Sulawesi build. This board is one of those panels, mid-20th century, cut by hand into hardwood, filled with red and white and set with shell.
In front of it a lamp made from an old Chinese pot, once used to hold water or vegetable oil, now fitted with a hand-sewn linen shade. Beside it a second pot of the same kind, left as it was, and a sago bowl from the Ramu river in Papua New Guinea, carved in the shape of a boat.
Dark clay, worn hardwood, soft linen, the materials of a wabi-sabi interior. Four objects made by hand in three different places, and somehow they belong together.
This is what we love about old things, nothing matches, and everything fits.
One is enough to change how a room feels. Two, even more so.
Available individually, please write to us for details.

Raised.
One rice wine jar set on an old Chinese bench, the other resting on the floor beside it. Both early 20th century, both turned on a wheel - you can still see where the potter’s hands rose and fell.
The bench is Chinese too, mid-20th century, worn almost black by use. Objects that were never made for one another, and yet sit together beautifully.
Grey clay with the faint marks of the wheel, antique Chinese pottery, warmed by the light that reaches them. Simple, generous forms with a wonderful stillness to them.
The kind of pieces that make a corner of a home feel calm and considered.
Available individually - please write to us for details.

Two.
Two stools stacked one above the other, both from Burkina Faso and both mid-20th century.
Each has a gently curved seat and a handle at either end, cut from the same piece of wood, for carrying, and for steadying oneself when sitting down.

In West Africa an antique wooden stool was rarely just furniture. To be seated was a privilege, and the shape of a seat spoke of rank and standing.
Pale honeyed wood, the seats hollowed and worn smooth, the surfaces still showing where the tool passed. Simple, sculptural, and beautifully aged.
The kind of object that makes a room feel quietly lived in.
