A Harvard-led study (Etcoff et al., 2011) found that women wearing makeup were rated significantly higher in competence, and that boost held up even under longer, more deliberate evaluation. Not just a first-glance effect.

But here’s where it gets complicated. The same women rated as more competent were simultaneously rated as less trustworthy when they went too far. And a separate body of research on what’s called the “Beauty is Beastly” effect shows that in professional and leadership contexts, overstyling can actively work against you, triggering assumptions of incompetence or inauthenticity.

So yes…appearance lifts credibility. Until it doesn’t.

I ran my own experiment. I couldn’t expand it long enough to test every variable, but career researchers already did that work, and the data lines up.

Here’s what I can tell you about my results: the anecdotal feedback was lovely. Genuinely meaningful. And completely at odds with what the KPIs showed.

Data doesn’t care about feelings. Neither does your audience’s subconscious.

So if you’re on this platform selling knowledge-based services — coaching, consulting, expertise of any kind — there is a baseline level of effort required in your hair, makeup, and outfit. Not to look pretty. To be perceived as credible.

You can ignore this. You’re allowed to.

But if the marketing bros have been telling you “just show up however,” and your content isn’t converting the way it should, now you know one of the variables they forgot to mention.

ولكن اذا لاستخدامها متل ما انا استعملتها، فالتقنيات كل يوم عم تتحسن اكتر.

المشكلة الحقيقية انها مصممة والمتحدث الأجنبي بالبال، لهيك الحكي العربي ما عم يترجم صح بحركات الفم عند النسخة الرقمية. هيدا اكيد مع الوقت حيتحسن كمان.
