MEET LUMA! ✨🐦🏀

One year ago this weekend, Novas Hoops held our very first clinic. As we celebrate how much our community has grown since that first weekend, we can’t imagine a better moment to introduce the newest member of our crew: Luma the Spontaneous Hummingbird! 💫

We love seeing the mascots, traditions and larger-than-life team spirit surrounding our favorite WNBA teams recently. They help turn a team into a community and give fans a symbol to rally around.

We believe our girls deserve that same kind of magic. 🪄

You don’t have to be a professional organization to create something meaningful. Novas hoopers now have a symbol that represents who they are, what they bring to the court and the community they are building together. ✨

Inspired by the Anna’s hummingbirds that make their home throughout our local landscape, Luma’s story begins along the Albany and Berkeley shoreline. You might imagine her zipping among the wildflowers and trees of the Albany Bulb, the Berkeley Marina and César Chávez Park before flying into a Novas gym. 😄

Just like the community she represents, Luma belongs to more than one neighborhood. She connects the places where our families live, play and come together.

Luma is quick, fearless and full of unstoppable energy. She moves through challenges with speed and precision, reminding us that athletes of all sizes can make a huge impact.

Most importantly, Luma embodies everything we see in our Novas hoopers. She is curious and courageous. She competes with joy. She brings her own spark while making her whole crew stronger. And she’s always ready to spread her wings and try something new.

Over the past year, we’ve watched our players grow in their skills, confidence and belief in what they can do. Luma represents the energy, heart and potential in every girl who steps onto the court with us.

As we celebrate one year of Novas, please help us welcome Luma! 💗💙

Here’s to all the places we’ll fly together next. ✨

She moves with speed and precision, brings plenty of spark and reminds us that athletes of all backgrounds, sizes and skills can make a huge impact. ✨

The glow is getting brighter… ✨

Here’s your first real clue: Our mystery teammate may be small, yet she’s quick, fearless and full of unstoppable energy.

Think you know who, or what, is headed our way?

Something new is coming to the Novas universe… 👀✨

We’ve been working on something very special, and it’s almost time to share it with our community.

What do you think it could be?

Partnerships like this make our first-ever Novas League even more special. 🏀✨

We are so excited to partner with Shelley Russi and Ref-ology @ref.ology this fall! Ref-ology develops basketball officials not only in rules and mechanics, but also in self-awareness, decision-making, leadership, and fairness—values that feel deeply aligned with how we want our players to experience the game. 💙

We feel incredibly lucky to have Ref-ology’s officials on the court and Shelley’s experience and guidance behind our league play. We know we have so much to learn from her and are grateful to build alongside an organization that cares as deeply as we do about developing people, strengthening community, and serving the game with excellence.

Here’s to a wonderful first season together! 💫

Not one, but TWO Olympians in the gym! 🤩🏀

We were incredibly lucky to welcome Cal Bouchard @calbouchard and Oderah Chidom @o_deer as special guest coaches at Novas League last weekend.

🇨🇦 Cal represented Team Canada 🏀 at the 2000 Sydney Olympics
🇳🇬 Oderah represented Team Nigeria 🏀 at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics

What an unforgettable opportunity for our hoopers to learn directly from two incredible leaders who competed on the world’s biggest stage. We are SO grateful they shared their time, wisdom and love of the game with our hoopers. ✨

No pressure, Cal and Oderah…but we’d happily make this a regular thing. You’re welcome back in the Novas gym anytime! 😉💫
