Young Lovers - The Circles End

I remember hearing them play for the first time. The uncluttered melodies resonated with me immediately. There was a feeling of something lost coming back to me again. I asked if I could record a song with them and this started a 10 year long journey to record this record. In the middle of recording this record we stopped to not only record an EP but a completely different full length record. And once we finally did manage to finish, the decision was made to fully orchestrate with a very ambitious live string score. Add a few more years….

Some albums take time to grow. It’s been a pleasure not only recording with them but being let in to their family. And if any band I’ve worked with has been a family, it’s them. Here’s to a decade of @youngloversla by @novisplit

Behold : Foot Ox - A Lighthouse With Silver Dog Eyes. Such a beautiful record with beautiful songs and amazing players. Teague’s voice and songwriting has always captivated me. There’s a quality in his voice that is uniquely his and cuts through any mix and any arrangement. Who he is always shines through. How I long for that quality. Working on this record has been an amazing experience and I’ll miss our very in-depth late night “work” phone conversations. Call me sometime just to talk @foot_ox_ .

Novi Split “If Not This, Then What” 2014

(guest post by @fdotsanchez)

In 2014, my daughter was one and just starting to speak. I was deep into Bay Area rap—HD’s Extortion Muzik, early Mozzy tapes. Folks around me were worried she’d learn to talk by saying “free the thugs” or “I bounce out with a stick.”

Then one night, driving her around late trying to calm her down, I remembered a CD I got randomly in a @crailtap order back in 2003—The Real Diego – Weekend EP. It had this soft, strange, perfect energy. Music you could wrap yourself in. I tracked down a radio station copy on eBay. A+++ would buy again.

Reading the liner notes, I saw the name: David Jerkovich. I looked him up and found If Not This, Then What—his latest project, @novisplit. I bought it on Bandcamp and loaded it onto my iPhone 4. We almost wore the MP3s out.

Zoe learned every word. Not just lyrics—melodies. Her first real words came from singing along to that album.

The sound wasn’t what I expected after The Weekend EP. It leaned Western—twangy guitars, slow builds, dusty and intimate—but still warm and unfussy. David’s voice melted over everything. The lyrics felt everyday and profound all at once.

I messaged him on Instagram, sent him videos of Zoe singing in tune. He was surprised, maybe a little moved. That turned into a quiet IG friendship that’s somehow still going.

For her 4th birthday, we drove from Fresno to LA to meet him. Picnic. A private acoustic concert at the Griffith Park carousel—and yes, Zoe sang along. After the show we rode the carousel together, then hung out with him and his partner at their home in Los Feliz.

All that… from a random CD tossed into a skate shop order.

The Real Diego - Map of the Human Heart 7”.

We recorded this to ADAT 25 years ago. This month I remixed it and uploaded it to the Internet.

Keeping the dream alive for the next generation.

The one year anniversary of @ajjtheband “disposable everything” is now upon us and to celebrate they’ve released a companion album entitled “disposable everything else” with a bunch of remixes, demos and alternative versions. Feeling nostalgic for those times and wishing they lived closer to me. I imagine a world where we go out for big family style dinner to celebrate the anniversary of this record annually. by @novisplit

Summer begins now! The new @fidlar single ‘fix me’ is officially everywhere. Time to turn off the pilot light in the floor heater and haul the 10,000 btu portable air conditioner out the garage. Recorded @balboarec where we have a wall mounted ac that sometimes gives us trouble but still keeps the place nice and cool.

The new album “THC” from @thehighcurbs is out everywhere now! An amazing record from an amazing band. During the recording sessions they convinced me to get my first Costco membership. You guys changed my life. I wish we could record 3 records a year. I miss you guys.

Listen to this….. imagine a world where the @ajjtheband hit single “candles of love” gets a remix by @open_mike_eagle featuring @video_dave . It’s this current world we live in. And I got to mix it even though I once made an ass out of myself in front of him at a party rolling around the ground trying to play a trumpet while sauced. This is my redemption story. People can change. by @novisplit

My new project @deep_dreem_ new album “really deep” is officially released today. I’m very overprotective about this record but it’s time for it to leave the nest. Light a candle and listen to it. I’ll learn to let go. by @novisplit

This is weird to say out loud, but here is the new AJJ/Kool Keith/Kimya Dawson single “BEST OF ALL POSSIBLE WORLDS” that I had the absolute privilege to produce and mix. I mean, how is this possible? Kool Keith on the track? Are you kidding me? AJJ and Kimya Dawson on the track? What is happening? So hyped right now.

Go stream it immediately if not soon. by @novisplit
