An international #literaryjournal of Cumberland Univ. Seeking vibrant, modern writing and art. Managing Editor: Sandee Gertz @thepinktypewriterpoet

POSTS STORIES REELS

Novus Lit Club and Novus Literary Arts Journal are thrilled to welcome poet and fiction writer, C.I. Aki, author of The World Black, Beautiful, and Beast, to Cumberland University as our 10th Poet in Residence. This has become a time-honored tradition to bring the best of contemporary poetry and poets to our campus and classrooms, and we couldn’t be more excited for this semester’s choice. @soul_lit_writer

Named “One of 14 Black Poets You Need to Know” by Reader’s Digest and published in numerous journals and publications (including Novus!) C.I. is not only an author but an established educator, philosopher, Vanderbilt Divinity scholar, and gardener. He specializes in poetry which explores his Nigerian American identity and celebrates the subtle beauty of literary fiction (ahem, we clear our throats and HOWL a heck YES!) in his own work and in workshops for the Nashville Porch Writers Collective. Professor Gertz’s Poetry classes are currently reading from his collection and finding it to provide amazing and deep discussion. We are eager to see his new collection be published soon as well. If you are near the Cumberland campus, please come out to his reading at 2pm in the Vise Library and stay for his Lit Club chat to follow. (See Professor Gertz if you’d like to sit in on his 11:00am class with her CW256/406 students.)

Welcome C.I.! This Tuesday!

Before the full moon fades (the first of TWO this month…) do yourself a late-night favor and read “Moonlit” by poetess @paigeellenpassantino and her companion poem “Step One” in the Digital Edition of Novus at novusliterary.com. We did you the favor of providing one of those here…. “Moonlit” was one of our Managing Editor’s picks in poetry. But she didn’t have to fight for it (because who wouldn’t want to love this fragile gem?)

No words. But we have a lot of words on our site — go check em’ out!

Love “Kansas Summer Airplane Hangar, 1990” by @bryngribben ! (And who doesn’t want to go back to the 90’s?) “Up Daffodil Hills” by Jennifer Susan Smith is 😇 🤩👏— and this ART — middle position by GJ Gillespie (again!) — please see the poem pairing there by Stuart Harris — and art left and right by Cynthia Yachtman.

Divine.

Take a look at these beauties by our Featured Artist Sheila Squillante ….paired with thoughtful prose and poems. If you’re in this screenshot, comment with your handle in comments and we’ll tag you. (Giancarlo’s poem was an “managing editors’ pick” —we promise you won’t regret visiting the “Skull Room…”) ALSO: Thanks to Shelia — also a writer and head of Chatham University’s MFA program—for committing many works for this digital edition — we loved every one! Take a look at our full Artist Page, with all bios and statements from our amazing visual artists. Navigate to the art page by way of the slider at the bottom of the Home Page and enjoy!

Many more features and shout-outs to come! Art here by the amazing G.J. Gillespie.

The Novus Editors congratulate the editors and staff of the NEW Cumberland Chronicle— a twice monthly print newspaper featuring the happenings of our university. It looks beautiful! Just more evidence of all the literary opportunities available on campus. Many best wishes! by @novuslit

Sometimes you just want to step into the pages…We loved this art and poetry pairing by Emma Sywyj (art) and @soul_lit_writer C.I. Aki (poetry)….

Oh the happy accidents….when the artist and poet are strangers, and yet they come together on the page just right. Happy to have several art works by J.C. Henderson in this print edition, including “Harmony,” pictured here and paired with Charles Thomas’s @charlesthomaspoet “Reportage from the Village of Van Gogh’s The Starry Night, 1889.” Serendipity. 💫

Contributor copies in the mail Monday. Be sure to tag yourself in the comments if we haven’t added your handle.

Journals for sale at our web edition (website houses the SPRING edition not this special print journal) and you can hit the purchase button at the top of the page and order as many as you like. Patron/contributor discounts apply.

Happy Literary Holidays!
