It was a rainy afternoon in Paris. I just got off the Seine River cruise and I had to run because apparently I was waiting at the wrong bus stop. Thankfully, the driver saw me and waited for me to hop on while huffing.

In these moments, I felt so alive.

I can feel every pelt of rain in my face. My wool coat was getting heavier but the weight is comforting.

As early as 10, while riding a jeepney routing back to Lapuz from my elementary school I had this scary what if. What if I’d only circle this route for the rest of my life?

The fear was not because home was tough or the community was hostile. It’s because home was great and the community has always given more than it takes.

This balance of edge and gentleness that I learned from my family and district got me all the way here. Today, there is no fear just grace.

And if I’m being honest, my training in “gently” elbowing fellow commuters in a Lapuz jeep during rush hour was what got me through the streets and tunnels of Paris.
