Performing at Afterlife, being back home, felt better than I ever could have imagined. It was so good to be surrounded by friends and fellow artists all right from here.

I learned a lot playing in Europe. A lot about performing, a lot about venues, a lot about the ways that playing live music changes between countries and cultures. But what will truly stick with me is how much community matters. Having your place, where there are people you know and where you are known in return, where you have history and rapport and context, creates a space for art that nothing else can come close to, no matter how much of the rest of the creative world it might offer.

This isn't new. But to truly experience the weight it carries, the freedom it offers, and the joy it brings, planted those beliefs irrevocably into reality. It's different on foreign soil, alone before a gig. Looking out a confused audience. Having messages lost in the noise of hundred email threads.

Art is, always, what we make together.

I can't wait to play in Tokyo this weekend. With friends who love experimentation. Who are excited by the challenge at the boundaries. Who will share wild music and join together in revelation of what we can build.

Who I know
And by whom I am known

It's good to be home.

See you on Saturday.
You know where. 💙 by @nox_ipso

I’ve posted a few visuals here and there, but have mostly been quietly learning in the background for the last year. Everything I’ve shared has been simple, stemming from an exploration of a single concept or idea or learning a specific tool, but I shared a story last night that made me feel like I should just get on with it. So this is the first time I’ve attempted something comprehensive, pulling together everything I’ve learned so far. The learning curve has been steep, but as with so many things that you study in life, there always comes a day where things click. Where exertion becomes passion. Where strength has built and pathways have been laid and the work of pedaling becomes the unbridled enjoyment of motion.

I still have so so sooooo much to learn, but for the first time I can honestly say: this is fun.

I spent every flight during the Europe tour playing with this. Every free evening I wasn’t playing a show. Now it’s devouring my weekend. And I’m having a great time.

Thanks tremendously to @elekktronaut, @pppanik, @notothetalkingball, and @owsley_wylyfyrd for the amazing tutorials. Pieces from every one of them are in here, and if you want to learn to do this stuff (which you absolutely can), check them out. They will teach you everything. I mean everything.

And if you start the journey, the only advice I can give you is to stick with it. It’s crazy and mind bending, but the views are absolutely worth the climb.

Today marks the first time I've ever performed in the Czech Republic, the next stop on this small Europe tour and the only one where I'll be alone. Having been invited for a solo show by the amazing people at Yuku, I'm every bit as excited to share my art as I am to finally see in person everything they've built over the last few years. I can't wait for all the fun conversations we'll have this evening after everything wraps up.

That said, it's been a long time since I've done anything outside of Asia, and this visit is completely different from the years before. First, most obviously, I'm not DJing my tracks. But far, far more than that, my heart is full of all the people I'm carrying with me. Everyone back home in Tokyo and Osaka that Far Future represents. Everyone that has performed with us, visited us, or followed our work. Everyone that connects with what we do. I'm not here just for me, I'm here for all of them, for all of you. I'm here to build bridges that we all can walk, the same way others have done before me.

To share in a creative space that extends far beyond myself.

And maybe, someday, return with friends. by @nox_ipso

This was one of the very first tracks I put together using a live synth setup, and one of the first times I had written something using only hardware. For years, I had dreamed of finding some way to have the level of real time improvisational control over sound that I would have making music at home or in a studio without drowning in instruments or losing the feeling of flow and diversity that came from spinning records.

I started DJing as a teenager, having grown up on internet radio shows and underground mixes that brought me most of my taste in music. I practiced on just about the cheapest controller you could imagine until getting a couple lucky breaks in university. First, the person I just happened to move in next to had turntables and liked my mixes enough to let me use them (easy to do when you play someone their own record collection). And second, I managed to get a regular Saturday gig at a little downtown club that didn't care about me rolling in with whatever cheap or borrowed setup I could get my hands on that week.

While I'll never look back negatively on all those experiences, it always left me with this desire to have more improvisational control over the music I was playing. Don't get me wrong, you can do amazing things with mixing, and for a time I even switched from turntables to launching clips in Ableton's live view, which allowed me to be really wild. But I wanted the expressive power that I had while writing music, the ability to quickly create any sound I could think up, or to truly and fully improvise the way I would be able to sitting in front of a blank project at home.

In the end, it took me over a decade to figure out. To realize how synths could be used the way I wanted while keeping my setup light and portable. To have all of that creative flexibility while running live at the speed of drum and bass.

It's not perfect, and I'm sure someone smarter than me could have done it much faster and with far less. But I'm having a tremendous amount of fun, and it leaves me feeling excited for what's to come, for all the creative projects I just haven't figured out yet.

Let's hope we all live at least a thousand years, eh? by @nox_ipso

Working on visuals. 👾✨

Unfortunately, instagram compression loses a lot of the line data when things are moving quickly, so it appears much darker until the end. As it slows down, there isn't as much difference between the keyframes, and they aren't blended with the black background.

It's hard not to consider how much of artists' work is lost due to the limited platforms they use to share it with us.

I guess in the end nothing beats a gallery. 😊 by @nox_ipso

Far Future has brought me so much absolute joy. More than I can ever put into words.

I can't believe that we managed to find this place. And I can't believe so many have come to share their creativity.

This weekend is the first of our break and I miss you all so much already.

I can't wait to be back and to see your art 💙 by @nox_ipso
