Majora’s Mask interpretation done with engraving / etching linework!

I’ve been wanting to translate more game imagery through the lens of engraving, so this was a super fun piece to put together in this style.

I included some inspo I used in the last slide, from the original Majora’s Mask Official Guidebook!

As some of you know, one of my favorite subjects to tattoo are 15th - 18th century engravings !
I recently spoke about this French artist and the series that inspired the piece you see here !

This is my take on François Joullain’s “Habit de Furie”(1725). What I have the most fun with is trying to preserve what gives the original engraving its character while adapting it into a form that can actually live on as a tattoo !

The last few slides show a couple more plates from the same series that I’d love to tattoo someday !

My take on François Joullain’s Habit de Furie (1725),
based on Claude Gillot’s costume designs for Les Élémens.

One of my favorite parts of working with old engravings is the challenge of figuring out which lines should stay as they are and which ones need to be re adapted so they’ll still feel like an engraving years later on skin 🔏 taken in San Juan, Puerto Rico by @noxttt
