One of South Africa’s rising lighting professionals, Noxolo ‘Nox’ Zwane has spent the past six years helping bring stories to life through the art and science of lighting. From television dramas to documentaries and feature films, her work reflects both technical precision and creative vision.

As one of the few female Gaffers in the industry, Nox is also helping to open doors for greater diversity and representation behind the camera while building a reputation for excellence on set.

I feel like I’m a superhuman! This job is very empowering!!
Like every other job, there are challenges, but they are worth it. When you love something so much, every challenge is just, in its own way, exciting. You enjoy tackling the challenges.
Also, knowing that we are breaking stereotypes and boundaries makes all the challenges feel like nothing.

I feel amazing as a woman in this industry. The industry is really opening up for women, and more women are coming in. They are taking those hands-on jobs, and we are breaking the stereotype of being the ones who should only be by a desk, looking pretty and doing paperwork. Now we can choose what we want to do. Some like the technical side and some the paperwork. The ability to choose is wonderful. It feels amazing to be part of that!
And that’s what motivates me to keep going, to never stop, because if I stop, then we are one woman short on the floor! I just want to keep going so more tech chicks will have the courage to join 💕

A Durban-based Gaffer and DUT Video Technology graduate, she has worked on hit productions like Imbewu: The Seed, Sibongile and the Dlaminis, Amalanga Awafani, and Outlaw. With credits across dramas, films, and documentaries including Grade 13, Father’s Day, Lottery Love and more, Nox has carved her space as one of the few female Gaffers in the country. Beyond the set, she’s also a Zulu poet, scriptwriter, and passionate farmer, proving that her creativity and dedication shine in every sphere.
