Getting my feet wet preparing for Soon is Now festival and exhibition opening this weekend! This year’s festival is concurrent with the public opening of the exhibition Placing Water in The River Center at Scenic Hudson’s Long Dock Park, 8 Long Dock Road. Open to the public from 12-7pm during the festival on Saturday, October 17 with a reception from 5-7pm. Exhibition hours continue through Nov 22nd, Fri-Sun 12-5pm.

with artists Jeremy Dennis, Ronnie Farley, Mary Mattingly, Steve Rossi, Renee Royale, Sarah Cameron Sunde, SPURSE, Robbie Wing

Placing Water focuses on the geographical and cultural distinctiveness of place-based, embodied understandings of our relationship to imperiled waterways. Through body and sound immersions, material explorations, research, documentation, participatory actions, and storytelling, the artists directly engage with the entangled history and ecology of specific water bodies, ranging from the Muh-he-kun-ne-tuk/ Hudson River and Mohawk River Watersheds, the East River and New York City’s watershed, the Atlantic Ocean and waters surrounding and crossing Long Island, the Erie Canal, the Monongahela River, and Lake Michigan. Marked by curiosity, care, and reverence, the exhibition operates through strategies like mapping, walking, recording, shaping, submerging, measuring and restaging to uncover histories and evidence of our human degradation of water, so intertwined with our colonial and industrial legacies, while also witnessing, honoring, and drawing attention to the waters so integral to our survival.
The festival connects with the Placing Water exhibition with water-themed live performance works staged in the landscape of Scenic Hudson’s Long Dock Park. Performances by Rock City Falls Trio, Felicia Ballos & Elisa Santiago, Twinkle Burke, Jojo Gonzalez, Elizabeth M Lindy, SPURSE, Robbie Wing, and Zyanya. by @np_fpa

📣Mark Your Calendars! Professor Kerry Dean Carso @kdcarso will present her research in our first "Art History in Action: Our Faculty Present Their Scholarship" event of the 26-27 academic year!

Thursday, October 22nd, at 5:30 PM in JFT 1010, Professor Carso talk is "Washington Allston’s Monaldi: A Tale (1841): A Behind-the-Scenes Look at Interdisciplinary Research"

About the talk:

"The 19th Century American artist Washington Allston bridges the worlds of art and literature in his novel Monaldi: A Tale (1841). Full of Gothic intrigue and suspense, Allston’s novel tells the story of a renowned and idealistic Italian artist named Monaldi who descends into madness and despair after falling prey to the machinations of his evil poet-friend Maldura and a bandit named Fialto. In his time, Allston achieved fame as a Grand Manner history painter in both Great Britain and the United States, but his novel has received less attention from scholars than his paintings.

"Professor Carso’s new edition (University of Wales Press, 2026) draws attention to this semi-forgotten novel in the transatlantic Gothic canon. Professor Carso will give a behind-the-scenes look at the primary research and new discoveries she uncovered while researching and editing Allston’s novel."

BONUS! Professor Carso has a blog post on her new book at the @uniwalespress website. Go to
https://www.uwp.co.uk/monaldi-a-tale-1841/ (or to Link in our Bio!)

Refreshments will be provided.

NEXT UP- Rehearsals have begun for Arthur Miller’s THE CRUCIBLE. Check out a behind the scenes peak into rehearsals of this timely american classic directed by Catherine Doherty. Tickets on sale Nov 2nd!

One of the most acclaimed plays in the American theatrical canon, this exciting drama about the Puritan purge of witchcraft in old Salem is a gripping and timely parable of contemporary society, as well as a studied historical tale. The story focuses upon a young farmer, his wife and a young servant-girl who maliciously causes the wife’s arrest for witchcraft. The farmer brings the girl to court to admit the lie – and the monstrous course of bigotry and deceit is terrifyingly depicted. The farmer, instead of saving his wife, finds himself also accused of witchcraft and ultimately condemned along with a host of others. taken in SUNY New Paltz by @np_fpa
