Very important topic! Thank you @tacticalveterinarian⠀

Posted @withregram • @tacticalveterinarian K9handlers, now that I got your attention. Swipe left to see various injuries I've treated in working dogs related to training environments. I don't remember all the scenarios but I literally have a folder on my desktop labeled "working dog injury- training" with close to 100 photos ⠀
.⠀
#workingdogswednesday This is a follow up post to @denmother_k9 @worthlesshandler regarding risk of injuries during training. ⠀
There's always risk, but you can minimize it greatly by checking the training site and doing a walkthrough of your scenarios in your mind.⠀
.⠀
Construction sites, abandoned houses and areas with lots of brush or debris make great training sites. But look around, are there any sharp metal, broken glass, hypodermic needles, or exposed rusty nails? Have you scanned the area for rattlesnakes, holes in the ground or areas of slippery footing? I always ask decoys, if you're not wearing a bitesuit- what pokey things or dangers might you be concerned about? Those dangers are the same for the dog.⠀
.⠀
Last year, I got texts from multiple handlers in the same training group...because their dogs suffered similar lacerations to the neck after going through the same training scenario. I've treated detection dogs bit by rattlesnakes and another that through a glass window. I've treated dogs that fell off raised platforms or slipped after biting resulting in the decoy landing on and injuring the dog. You name it, I've probably I've probably seen it! Train hard, but also train smart and safely! by @npcausa

A successful K9 team has many members, and our veterinarians are arguably some of the most important, particularly in the toughest of times! Today we say thank you! ⠀
