African Blackwood is the darkest rosewood. It is widely used for clarinets. This spoon is in my book, Spoons to Stir the Soul, and it is the collection of the Museum for Art in Wood.

Prickly - Curly Cocobolo Sapwood - 6.75 x 3.5 x 1.5 - 2015 - First Photo: Jim Osborn

Two things. 1. Sapwood is often dismissed, cut off, not seen as beautiful on its own. 2. There are very few grey woods (Black Mangrove, for example) but one way to have grey wood if you, like me, enjoy grey wood is to use pieces of sapwood.

This figured piece of cocobolo sapwood had stunning grain and equally wonderful texture just under the bark both conducive to a good piece. Give sapwood a chance.

Andrew’s sculptural pots are woodfired in most cases and the colors of the ash glaze are his delight and focus. He is especially skilled at turning a modest sake cup and other functional ware into stunning sculptural vessels. His work benefits from very close observation. There’s so very much going on in the colors and forms of these functional pots.

He’s also a lot of fun to talk to, sharing his techniques and stories from these primal firings over the last 10+ years. His mission is to build community among people who value the hand made objects in daily life, especially ceramics.

Andrew apprenticed with Jeff Shapiro. Jeff invited Andrew to participate in the Hudson Valley Pottery Tour as his guest artist. Jeff’s exceptional sculptural work, of course, is available in his showroom.

The entire Hudson Valley Pottery Tour is a rich experience held at the time of beautiful fall foliage. I encourage everyone to spend a day or two hopping from studio to studio enjoying a cross section of great ceramic art.

Curled Up - American Smoketree Burl - 10 x 5 x 5 - 2008 - Photos: Jim Osborn

“The Best wood and one of the very best pieces”, he says modestly. I bought the wood from Richard at Carlton McClendon’s Rare Woods in Atlanta. It was a flawless chunk and it inspired the bulbous form that soon appeared. I don’t know where the idea came from. It’s more like a clay idea. Or maybe Mike Hosuluk was at fault with his wormlike creations. At any rate I went right to work making intersecting tapered worm forms. I thought of it as a spoon because I can’t help myself. It’s one of the least plausible spoons. Maybe it’s a slightly spoon-like sculpture. That’s where I landed and am probably staying. Years later I tried to make another similar but I didn’t have the juice the second time. In my experience, I rarely have the juice to repeat an idea. Much better plan to work up a new idea.

I want tiny spoons to capture just as much attention as large ones. This is a good little spoon. Is it as strong as it would be were it to be 3 times as large. Wrong question! It is totally alright that some are big and others are small. The same work, inspiration, carving, sanding, finishing goes into a small spoon as a large one. I think they should be judged as equals.

More sapwood than heartwood which is fine with me. HRB sapwood has the look of stone. The swirling tones of grey are always stimulating to me.

Today is Fleur Bresler’s 100th birthday. Her continuous support for 35 years really matters. Her leadership in the wood art field really matters. Her many donations to museum collections really matters. Her leadership on boards really matters. The example she set by celebrating her 92nd birthday at Burning Man was inspiring. Her sense of humor really matters. Her being such a “good sport” always mattered. Her wild sweaters and shoes still matter. Her sharing of her vast art and craft collection lifts us all.

We love you Fleur and wish you health, happiness, and many more memorable life adventures.

Today is Diane’s Birthday. Let’s celebrate her everyday but a little extra today. I usually show a variety of photos of her but will focus this time on the part of her life that lights up her eyes and fills her heart. Her grandson, Rowan, is an island of pure love and joy for Diane. She reads to Rowan, sings to him, and comforts him when he’s tired. He’s 18 months old now. Walking and talking and even saying, “Hi Grandma” ,when he sees her.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DIANE You are a wonderful Grandma. My Dad used to say that every hour you spend fishing is added to the end of your life. For you I think it’s that way with Rowan. The time you spend with him is time in the bank for you.
