“For My 1st Ex-Lover to Die” by @francescabellpoet

For My 1st Ex-Lover to Die

I heard this morning my old lover died, and I cannot say I loved him, though I may have said it at the time, cannot say he was a good person or lover or anything other than a man who called me in the small hours, driving back roads drunk in his Ferrari, when I was 23 and he was 50, who bought me books and a Lalique clock that’s been broken 20 years, who was the dumbest smart person I ever knew, crying in his car at 4 in the morning, wearing a coyote skin coat that reached to his shoes, and I didn’t want his money or his cocaine or to be his 7th wife, and I’ve seldom thought of him except to remember a dark animal crossing his driveway at night, and the 2 staircases in his grand house, going up, going down, and how I held him, deep in my body, and he made a small, sad sound.

Hello, prose poem. And hello, single sentence prose poem! We love a syntactical flex. This poem unfolds like a true confession – first, we get the broad details (he wasn’t a “good person or lover”) and next we get the details that feel small and important (Ferrari, floor-length coyote skin coat) and thennnnn we get the details that gut: the feelings under the facts. The tiny, seemingly minute and yet deeply vulnerable, intimate deets that comprise a relationship and that comprise our memories. The last clause leaves readers with that OOMPH moment of humanity—and there are breadcrumbs leading us to this final moment (see: “crying in his car at 4 in the morning”)—but we’re really hit with the stark and damn pathetic truth of it all: “I held him, deep in my body, and he made a small, sad sound.” Sheesh!!! If poetry is, in no small part, about stripping language (and ourselves) down to the quick, then I don’t know what’s more poetic than this. Death, sex, vulnerability—all in a blip. Ain’t that what a life is?

So happy to have one of my ekphrastic poems in @michiganquarterlyreview's summer issue! What does ekphrastic mean? The real def is "verbal representation of visual representation" which basically means writing about art. The art I'm writing about here is a sculpture with the same name as the poem (picture in last slide). Y'all, I was lucky enough to see this beaut in person when I was a moody teen & it's been banging around in my head ever since. by @nsfwpoems
