Yesterday and today marked significant milestones for the Narromine and Nyngan Local Aboriginal Land Council communities.

Through our proactive partnership with the NSW Aboriginal Housing Office, NSWALC has delivered more homes to the Central Region under the Social Housing Accelerator Fund (SHAF).

This project was made possible through Aboriginal land ownership under the Aboriginal Land Rights Act 1983 (ALRA), demonstrating the tangible outcomes that land rights can deliver for Aboriginal communities.

As we know, Aboriginal Land Rights in NSW and the ALRA are currently under threat following the introduction of the Crown Land Management Amendment Bill 2026.

NSWALC and the wider NSW Aboriginal Land Rights Network remain united in opposing the Bill. We cannot stand by legislation that would weaken Aboriginal land rights and undermine the land ownership, opportunities, and programs that deliver meaningful, lasting outcomes for Aboriginal people across NSW.

100 years and $440 million to resolve the outstanding land claim backlog.

Gidgee Group Managing Director, Sean Gordon, estimates the extreme cost and time it would take for the state government to approve the backlog of land claims at their current rate. This estimate does not include the cost and time to LALCs and NSWALC.

“No government would tolerate 43,000 unresolved development applications.”

Today, more than 43,000 Aboriginal land claims remain stuck in the system across NSW. Behind every claim is a Community and behind every claim is an opportunity delayed.

At the NAIDOC event, Land Rights in NSW – The Road Ahead, NSWALC Chairperson Dr Raymond Kelly spoke about the backlog of land claims and how that will delay the futures for our young people.

This month, the South Coast Region held their regional forum in Nowra, to connect and yarn over the top priorities in the Land Rights Network. Day 1 of the forum was opened by Uncle Sonny Simms with a heartfelt Welcome to Country, followed by recent developments in the Crown Lands Management Amendment Bill, South Coast Native Title claims and the Indigenous Land and Sea Corporation.

Day 2 included sessions sharing knowledge between LALCs, success stories and identifying new opportunities to improve processes. Each and every session showed deep engagement, interest and passion for bettering outcomes for Community, so thank you to everyone who attended and made the forum a great success. by @nswalc

Guulabaa: Place of Koala is bringing international attention to Bunyah LALC. A precinct with Koala conservation, a cafe and treetop adventures, Guulabaa is a tourism hot spot on the Mid North Coast.

In this video Bunyah LALC CEO, Amos Donovan, and LALC Chair, Jamie Donovan, share the story behind Guulabaa and the successes they’ve had since opening a few years ago.

Wangaaypuwan Local Aboriginal Land Council is the most recent Land Council to be formally established.

In alignment with the LALCs aspirations and goals, WANLALC became a fully
funded Land Council on 1 July 2024. With a focus on caring for Country, economic development, and local empowerment, WANLALC has quickly become a dynamic force in western NSW.

Within two years of operation, WANLALC secured funding for office infrastructure
through the NSWALC Community Benefits Grant.

The LALC also successfully created a ranger program, which supports direct employment for Aboriginal men and women in the region. The program also supports upskilling in environmental management and collaboration with government agencies.
