Sebastian Kloborg’s has a deep love for everything surrounding the act of a performance and the human longing to capture the fleeting “now”. Live on Tape is a tribute to the concert - to all that unfolds within and around it - and to the pursuit of an ultimate symbiosis between mind, body, movement and music. Drawing on the Baroque fascination of pain, ecstasy, vanitas, and resurrection; Live on Tape takes us on a journey among the living and those beyond - all searching for a way to feel something again, even if it comes at the expense of others. Somewhere between order and chaos; life and death a space emerges where we might get a glimpse of our inner most truest self. Who is left when the notes stop — us, or them? That is the question Sebastian Kloborg built Live On Tape around, and I have been turning it over since we finished in Copenhagen. The piece is set in the old Radiohus, a building made for catching sound and sending it into the dark. Kloborg fills it with people trying to hold on to a present that keeps sliding away: two dancers, an actor with a reel-to-reel, and a singer. And by the end, a wolf. The reference recording for the last thing I sing — Feste’s epilogue from Twelfth Night — is Alfred Deller, the man who made my voice type a modern possibility. A countertenor two generations downstream, singing “Hey ho, the wind and the rain” in a room built for tape, in the shadow of a dead countertenor’s voice. Kloborg’s question rather answers itself, if you are listening. We needed one more verse than Shakespeare left us. I wrote it, and hoped he wouldn’t mind. Around that: Vivaldi, Caroline Shaw, Meredi — Concerto Copenhagen on the stage rather than in a pit, the dancers of Kammerballetten moving among them. Not a singer with dancing around him: one continuous thing, and I was inside it rather than in front of it. Tonight we open. ⠀ I’ve spent two weeks inside a piece that asks who is left when the notes stop, and I’ve been reading Kierkegaard in the evenings, which is either very appropriate or a warning sign. ⠀ He wrote a book here in Copenhagen called Repetition — about a man who returns to a city trying to recover an experience he once had, and finds it will not come back. The moment refuses to be summoned twice. ⠀ Anyone who has walked onstage on a second night knows that feeling. So does anyone who has ever tried to capture on a recording something that happened in a performance and found that what came back was not the thing at all. The tape repeats perfectly, and it repeats perfectly because nothing in it is alive. ⠀ The last thing I sing is Feste’s song from Twelfth Night — the clown, alone, after everyone has gone home. “A great while ago the world begun… but that’s all one, our play is done, and we’ll strive to please you every day.” The universe beginning and a performer promising to come back tomorrow night, in a single breath. ⠀ No answers from me. Copenhagen. ⠀ This week I’m on stage in Live On Tape, a new work by Sebastian Kloborg for Kammerballetten and Concerto Copenhagen. Not a concert with dancers and not a ballet with a singer, but one continuous thing: Vivaldi, Caroline Shaw, dancers, an actor, a countertenor somewhere inside it, and a question Kloborg asks outright — who is left when the notes stop? ⠀ I’ve been circling that question for two weeks and I’m no closer to an answer.
