Hwch Ddu Gwta | The tailless black sow 🐗 *** Adref, adref am y cynta’, Hwch Ddu Gwta a gipio’r ola’ Ar 31 o Hydref, Nos Galan Gaeaf, byddai cymunedau’n dod ynghyd i ymgynnull, cynnau coelcerthi ac yn dilyn hen arferion amddiffynnol a oedd, yn ôl y sôn, yn gwarchod rhag ysbrydion crwydrol a direidus. Mewn straeon traddodiadol, byddai plant yn ymgynnull o amgylch coelcerth ac wrth i’r tân ddiffodd, byddai pawb yn rhedeg adref gan ofni y byddai’r Hwch Ddu Gwta yn mynd ar eu holau neu’n dal yr unigolyn olaf i gael ei adael ar ôl. *** Home, home, at once, the tailless black sow shall snatch the last one! 31 October is known as Nos Galan Gaeaf, the eve before the first day of winter where communities would come together to light fires, gather, and take part in protective customs believed to guard against wandering spirits and mischief. In traditional stories, children would gather around a bonfire and as the fire died down, everyone would run home, fearing that the Hwch Ddu Gwta, a tailless black sow would chase or catch the last person left behind. #CalanGaeaf #Cymru #Wales #folklore #history by @ntcymru

Forget Halloween for a minute. Have you heard the Welsh legend of the Hwch Ddu Gwta? Ad| Hundreds of years ago in Wales, children were warned to get home before the bonfires went out on Nos Galan Gaeaf. Why? Because there was something they really didn’t want to meet on the way home… The Hwch Ddu Gwta, a terrifying black pig with no tail! According to Welsh folklore, this mysterious creature would roam the countryside as the fires died down, chasing anyone who hadn’t made it home in time. And some versions of the story even feature a ghostly woman dressed in white, known as Ladi Wen. Can you imagine being a child, hearing that story, and then having to make your way home in the dark? I’d have been running! Calan Gaeaf, celebrated on 1 November, traditionally marked the beginning of winter in Wales. The night before, Nos Galan Gaeaf, was a time of bonfires, old customs and stories about spirits wandering among the living. And the Hwch Ddu Gwta is just one of the many stories passed down through generations. There’s so much more to Welsh Halloween traditions than you might realise. I visited @ntdinefwr in Carmarthenshire, where National Trust Cymru is bringing some of these Welsh legends and traditions to life this October half-term. I love that we’re still telling these stories hundreds of years later. They’re part of our history, our language and our culture, and they’re worth keeping alive. Did anyone ever tell you the story of the Hwch Ddu Gwta growing up? Or do you know another Calan Gaeaf tradition? Ad| Today we headed to @penrhyncastlent for a little Calan Gaeaf adventure, inspired by traditional Welsh harvest celebrations. We followed the autumn trail through the gardens and into Woods, where there were giant harvest vegetables popping up along the way, which the kids loved! There was so much to see and do, from colourful displays and fun activities to learning facts too. The kids had a go at all the lawn games, and of course, we had to stop at the adventure playground hidden away in the woods. We also popped into the Victorian Kitchen to learn about Stwmp Naw Rhyw, a traditional Calan Gaeaf dish made using nine different harvest ingredients. Such a lovely way to spend a day outdoors, and definitely one of our favourite things we’ve done this half term! On 29 October, there will also be printmaking sessions with Jŵls Williams, and on 30 and 31 October, there will be storytelling with Mair Tomos Ifans. #castellpenrhyn #penrhyncastle #nationaltrustwales #cymru #wales #halloweeen #calangaeaf by @ntcymru

Gwylio Terasau Castell Powis | Powis Castle Terrace Watch 🍁 **** Yn @PowisCastleNT, mae’r hydref yn dod ag awyrgylch trofannol. Dechreuwch ar y Teras Uchaf, lle mae planhigion banana yn tyfu yn y border trofannol a golygfeydd yn ymestyn ar draws Dyffryn Hafren. Wrth i chi ymlwybro i lawr y Terasau Eidalaidd o’r 17eg ganrif, mae dahlias a gwerddonnell yn dal i flodeuo. Ar y Terasau Isaf, mae’r dail o’r coed katsura sydd wedi cwympo yn arogli fel caramel. Allwch chi ei arogli wrth gerdded heibio? O dan waliau brics coch y castell, mae’r coed masarn yn troi’n goch dwfn, gan ddod â lliwiau tanllyd yr hydref i ochr y bryn, yn erbyn gwyrdd cyfoethog coed ywen siâp cymylau enwog Powis. **** At @PowisCastleNT, autumn comes with a tropical twist. Start on the Top Terrace, where banana plants grow in the tropical border and views stretch across the Severn Valley. As you make your way down the 17th-century Italianate Terraces, dahlias and salvias are still flowering. On the Lower Terraces, the fallen leaves of the katsura trees smell like caramel. See if you can catch it as you wander past. Beneath the castle’s red-brick walls, the acers are turning deep red, bringing fiery autumn colour to the hillside against the rich green of Powis’s famous cloud-shaped yews. Take a wander through the terraces and see how autumn is unfolding at Powis. #NTCymru #Cymru #PowisCastle #Welshpool #Powys by @ntcymru
