Thank you to everyone who joined us for Jonathan Kaufman’s book talk on Tuesday — and especially for coming with such great questions!

As Kaufman argues in “When America Roared,” the 1980s can serve not just to help understand the historical consequences of the Reagan administration and its brazenness, but to give a road map for how political possibilities can change wildly in just a short time. In an era that can feel rather bleak, we think these lessons are more crucial than ever.

Kudos, Jonathan! And special thanks as well to Brookline Booksmith for selling copies on site.

Next Thursday! CTM affiliate faculty member Sina Fazelpour will be moderating a conversation with author Mona Sloane about her new book, "Predicted: How AI is Restructuring Social Life."

Drawing on the book, Sloane will discuss how AI functions as a new form of social infrastructure—one that embeds prediction as a guiding principle of social organization through what she calls the "prediction paradigm."

Rather than treating AI's impacts as downstream effects of engineering design, she traces how AI systems both arise from and reorganize social practices, institutional logics, and professional authority. Her talk advances a sociology of AI that demystifies the technology and centers qualitative inquiry, institutional analysis, and public engagement, opening space for collective deliberation about alternative futures.

Very proud to see Eileen McGivney featured in Northeastern Global News this week! In the piece, NGN reporter Tanner Stening covers her team's recent National Science Foundation (NSF) grant and the project behind it.

It’s an awesome project. Eileen and her team are building a tool that lets healthcare students practice patient interactions by simulating clinical environments similar to what they'll see in real-life hospitals.

According to the research team, one of their goals for the project is not simply to make health care training more technologically sophisticated, but to give students more chances to practice “the human side” of the profession.

“We really built it from the ground up,” said McGivney. The grant, she added, “will allow us to build an authoring tool, where clinical faculty who have no experience with virtual reality or AI can create their own patients that are fit for their own curricula and classrooms.”

Have you been to Northeastern’s brand-new AI Makerspace yet? It’s now open in the first floor of Snell Library!

We’re especially thrilled to see that the first-ever exhibit in the new space is — in our humble opinion — a stacked lineup, and it happens to be all @northeasterncamd faculty. 👏

Drop-in hours are Monday - Friday from 12-4pm for walk-in help with projects. Whether you’re an expert or totally new to AI, the space is available to you as a resource!

CAMD faculty projects on view right now include:

➡️ “One Small Request (in the style of…)” by Jason Donati.

➡️ “Human in the Loop: Alert Blanket (Prototype)” by Laura Forlano and Sasha de Koninck.

➡️ “White matter pathways of a jazz musician’s brain as visualized using diffusion MRI” by Psyche Loui.

➡️ “I’m Sorry” by Morgan DiCesare.

➡️ “Topassy” by Doug Bielmeier.

We’re thrilled to welcome Maria Elena as CTM's next Associate Director! In her new role, she will support and advance our research mission by cultivating partnerships, securing funding, and expanding our membership and visibility across Northeastern and beyond.

Maria Elena's past leadership experience includes service as former chair of @nucommdept. She was also a chair and associate dean at her previous institution, Florida International University, where she led efforts in addressing barriers to equity, diversity and belonging.

As a communication studies scholar, Maria Elena’s research is situated at the intersection of strategic communication and health/science communication, focusing on community engagement with under-represented and hyper-vulnerable populations.
