Award Alert 🚨📑

Associate Professor, Alp Akcay; Mechanical and Industrial Engineering and Yucheng Wu won 1st Place for Best Track Paper Award in the Modeling & Simulation division at the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers Annual Conference 2026!

The paper, titled “Data-Driven Resource Aggregation for Scalable Digital Twin and Simulation Model Generation,” addresses a critical challenge in modern smart manufacturing: keeping simulation models up to date as factory systems change rapidly. The research proposes an automated approach that uses historical production data and inverse reinforcement learning to intelligently simplify digital twin simulation models, reducing complexity and computational cost while preserving accuracy.

Congratulations to these community members!

What is a consequence of war exacerbated global warming and extreme drought? The possible moving of major cities, acid rain, and the dehydration of a nation.

Take a moment to read a riveting Live Science article on the water crisis in Iran stemming from decades of broken water governance, political climate, climate change, and the current war written by Sascha Pare and featuring Northeastern University and the College of Engineering's very own Distinguished Professor, Auroop Ganguly.

His credentials don't stop at this article: College of Engineering Distinguished Professor, Civil and Environmental Engineering; Director of AI for Climate & Sustainability, Institute for Experiential AI; andChief Scientist and Joint Appointee, US DOE's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.

Could the future of microchip manufacturing be in orbit? @Northeastern student Rhea Dharia spent her co-op helping find out, with work that hitched a ride on a SpaceX rocket.

As a payload specialist at Besxar Space Industries, the mechanical engineering and bioengineering major helped design reusable canisters that would harness the vacuum of space to produce purer semiconductor material. Each one had to withstand the violent trip up and back down.

Northeastern professor Ning Wang found that many cells carry "mechanical memory," continuing to react to physical force like exercise long after it's stopped — a discovery he demonstrated by agitating hamster cells in short bursts that matched an hour of continuous stimulation.

Wang said stimulating fibroblast cells could boost collagen production and restore youthful elasticity, while similar mechanisms could help older adults or those with limited mobility get more from brief exercise.

📢 Join us this Thursday, October 8th, for the Galante Engineering Business Program’s next professional workshop, “Bridging Engineering and Business through Data.” We’ll be joined by Liz W., Galante and Northeastern alumna and Director of Data and Analytics at Modulate!

👩‍💻 Data plays an important role in connecting engineering and business, but what does that actually look like within a company? Liz will share her experience building data and analytics processes from the ground up at a Boston based tech startup and working across engineering and business teams.

💡 Drawing on her experience in both engineering and management, Liz will explore what a career in data can look like, how engineering and business teams can engage with data teams, and how data can help connect technical work with broader business goals. Galante Fellows and participants can expect practical insight into working across disciplines, building new processes, and developing a career in data.

📅 Thursday, October 8th | Egan Room 440 | 5:30–8:00 PM | Business Formal Attire
