Another fascinating British misfit.. the TR7 didn’t really look right and its 4 cylinder wasn’t inspiring. So they lobbed a V8 in it and called it a TR8. I wasn’t expecting much but this car really surprised me.. 4 years after the 7 was released they finally made it into a good car.. and then killed it two years later. This one was a surprise.. always thought they looked a bit of a dogs dinner when they came out in 2003. The design seems to have mellowed with time.. what do you think? but also it’s genuinely very good to drive. Amazing chassis. What a shame it came at totally the wrong time. This car was 20 years ahead of its time.. some serious innovation underpins the RO80, it’s a bit like a German Citroen DS. But despite it being so much better than the competition in almost every way.. it failed. Everyone talks about the rotary engine but there is so much more to this car! Did we give up on diesel too soon?

400Nm of torque. 50mpg. And all wrapped up in one of the coolest-looking hatchbacks of its era.

The Volvo C30 D5 is basically a hot hatch for people who also enjoy driving 500 miles without visiting a petrol station. It’s quick, effortless, economical and, inside and out, MUCH more interesting than the usual Golf or Focus.

And the dangerous bit? You can buy one for around £5,000.

This suddenly makes a lot of sense…

HOLIDAY: A few notable cars from Puglia, where I’m visiting Mum. 🇮🇹

Bizarrely, I’ve seen THREE Renault 4s — two of them white and parked on the same street. The Panda 100HP is also still a very cool little thing.

One thing you quickly notice down here is that small, cheap cars rule. And you can understand why when you discover that taxing something like a Giulia Quadrifoglio can cost roughly £4,000 A YEAR. Suddenly the UK doesn’t seem quite so hostile to motorists…

The speed limits are equally baffling. You’ll get 50km/h on a dead-straight road through absolutely nowhere, followed by 90km/h on something resembling a goat track. Consequently, NOBODY does 50. And I mean nobody. Even Google Maps seems to calculate journey times on the assumption that you’ll be doing 20–30km/h over the limit.

And finally, our hire car: the Toyota Aygo X.

Perfectly competent, but afflicted with all the usual modern driver-assistance nonsense. I’ve no idea what engine is in ours, but above 3,000rpm it sounds like someone has emptied a bag of spanners into a cement mixer. #italiancars #frenchcars #classiccars by @number27vids

Proof that you don’t need much power to have an unreasonable amount of fun.

Abarth took Autobianchi’s tiny, lightweight A112, gave it more power, a bit more attitude and created one of the original pocket rockets — years before the hot hatch formula really took off.

It’s small, noisy, wonderfully Italian and looks like it’s permanently on its way to cause trouble.

With around 70bhp in later versions, it doesn’t sound particularly impressive today. But when the entire car weighs about as much as a modern SUV’s optional extras, numbers rather miss the point.

In 1965 this cost more than the average house in the UK! The AC Frua 428 was actually based on the Cobra but they decided to try and make a luxury GT out of it.. with mixed results. Remember when these were everywhere? Vauxhall’s last attempt at the executive saloon. This one is an Omega V6 from 1999. I still remember seeing these in my rear view mirror in Police livery.. immediately feeling like I’d done something wrong 🤣. They also sold it in the USA as a Cadillac.. which was a total fail!!
