POSTS STORIES REELS

I’m counting down through my Top 10 shots from 2022. And finally, at Number 1…

Winning Position

Budapest 2022

This will come as no surprise if you follow me, as I’ve posted it many times over the past year :) It was taken while surveying the scene to recreate the well-known Martin Parr photo at the Széchenyi Thermal Baths (which ended up being photo Number 3 in this Top 10). But I spotted an opportunity for something special, given the positioning of the people surrounding the chessboard, and realised I needed to risk taking my (non-waterproof) camera into the pool. I’m very glad I did, as this is one of the shots I’m now most proud of in my 11 years of street photography. I worked the scene, taking around 80 photos from sightly different angles, waiting for things to line up, and it felt like almost every person in the scene was doing something interesting: the hands grasping his shoulders of the man closest, thoughtful post of the young guy playing chess at the back, man with drinks peering over him, woman in black sitting as if watching from the seats in an arena, the woman in the bright red swimming costume, etc. by @numbersix

Lady in Red

Budapest 2016

For the benefit of anyone new to my page, I’m posting some of my ‘classic’ shots again, with more background info than I’ve previously provided.

This shot is one of the photos I’m proudest of, and perhaps my best-known. I have it on my business card, and it’s interesting to see the reactions of those I give it to. Most people ‘get it’, but occasionally someone will laugh, as if it’s meant to be a joke (which it really isn’t meant to be).

I was in this spot for a while, waiting for the perfect subject to enter the scene. And eventually she did! Not only did her swimming costume perfectly match the surroundings, but her body fits the Renaissance-style scene, of draped towels and architecture clearly not based on modern design.

For a long time before street photography, my main artform was illustration (something I still do to some extent today). I used to attend life drawing classes, and those with more typical or larger-than-supermodel bodies were far more interesting to draw. I maintain that this photo wouldn’t be half as good were the subject a slim woman in a bikini.

In more recent years, I’ve realised it also makes a perfect companion to the next photo I’ll be posting. Stay tuned! by @numbersix
