Every nurse knows this moment 👇

A patient is scared, in pain, and doesn't speak English. The interpreter line has a wait. And everyone in the room is trying to figure out what's wrong.

I'm an ER nurse who speaks English, Spanish, Haitian Creole, and French, and I've been the one called over to translate more times than I can count. I've seen what a few words in a patient's own language can do. People calm down. They answer honestly. They trust you.

That's why I started Nurse Syllables 🩺

Here you'll find:
✔ Bedside phrases you can use on your next shift
✔ Pronunciation tips in Spanish, Haitian Creole & French
✔ Printable ER phrase guides made for nurses, EMTs, techs, and the whole care team

Let's start with one:
🇪🇸 ¿Tiene dolor?
🇭🇹 Èske ou gen doulè?
🇫🇷 Avez-vous des douleurs ?
= "Are you in pain?"

💬 Which language do your patients speak most often? Tell me in the comments, and I'll make my next posts for you.

📌 Follow @nursesyllables so you don't miss a phrase.

Your patient speaks French. You have 30 seconds before the interpreter line picks up. What do you say? 🩺

Meet the ER Phrase Guide: English & French 🇫🇷

136 bedside phrases, side by side, organized the way a real ER visit unfolds:
✔ Greeting and introduction
✔ Pain assessment + numbers 0–10
✔ Symptoms, history, and allergies
✔ Pregnancy and OB
✔ Procedures, comfort, and discharge

Every phrase uses the respectful formal "vous," and it's written by a multilingual ER nurse who uses these words at the bedside.

Try one on your next shift:
🇫🇷 Où avez-vous mal ?
= "Where does it hurt?"

(Yes, that space before the "?" is correct. That's how French does it 😉)

Perfect for ER and urgent care nurses, travel nurses, EMTs, nursing students, and anyone caring for patients from West and Central Africa, Canada, Europe, and the Caribbean.
