Are Africa’s oversight institutions anchoring democracy or enabling its regression? This was the main question yesterday when Nuru Trust Network joined the High-Level Dialogue on Public Institutions and Oversight in Africa, convened by African Institute for Development Policy (AFIDEP) with support from the Mo Ibrahim Foundation. Yvonne Achieng Abungu, an alumni of our Code for Democracy cohort, represented Nuru Trust on the panel, accompanied by Teresa Nyangi. The dialogue explored institutional accountability, drawing on the Africa Integrity Indicators, and featured the launch of the Round 13 scorecard and Integrity Narratives 2026 report. Key issues discussed included audit integrity and anti-corruption, electoral integrity and access to information, and inclusion of women, youth and persons with disabilities. Oversight institutions play a critical role in public accountability, but their effectiveness also depends on public trust and citizens’ ability to question how power is exercised. At Nuru Trust Network, we see civic engagement and community-led advocacy as important ways to connect citizens with governance processes and strengthen demands for transparency and accountability. by @nurutrustnetwork
On 20 and 21 October, Nuru Trust Network attended the @forumciv Artivism Showcase, where creatives from Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania turned art into a tool for social justice, awareness and community engagement. Through poetry, spoken word, music and other forms of creative expression, they shared powerful messages on human rights, social justice and broader societal issues, alongside themes of mental health, healing and personal growth. What stayed with us: - Creative storytelling amplifies community voices - Art makes social issues more accessible - It encourages people to reflect on what affects their societies This echoes the spirit of the #MakeItMakeSense campaign, which we are running on TikTok with @accountlab to turn complex issues into everyday conversations. Follow us on tiktok to see more. How has art helped you connect with a social issue? Tell us in the comments. #artivism #CivicEngagement #nurutrustnetwork by @nurutrustnetwork

What does it really mean to humanize democracy? In the second article of our Coalition Partner and GDC Global Forum sponsor @ketteringfoundation’s latest Interconnected newsletter, @miss_brown_eyedgirl, Executive Director of fellow Coalition Partner @nurutrustnetwork, reflects on that question through her experience at the Athens Democracy Forum. From Nairobi to Athens, Mary carries three deceptively simple questions: Who gets to speak? Who gets heard? And who is left outside the room? Her reflection challenges us to look beyond who is represented in global democracy conversations and ask who actually has the opportunity to shape them. She explores the gatekeeping that persists across the democracy sector, the barriers facing grassroots voices from the global majority, and why meaningful intergenerational dialogue requires bringing young people into the conversation, not placing them alongside it. And she leaves us with an important challenge: “None of this is about lowering the bar. It is about widening the door.” This is a reflection worth sitting with. If democracy is meant to serve everyone, then the spaces where its future is debated must become braver, broader and more human. Don’t miss Mary’s powerful reflection in the Digital Democracy Library on the GDC website, link in bio. #Democracy #GDCForum2026 #GDCGlobalForum #AthensDemocracyForum #YouthParticipation #InclusiveDemocracy by @nurutrustnetwork
Kenyas efforts to address the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) action plan raise an important question: how can the country strengthen oversight of Non-Profit Organisations (NPOs) while ensuring that legitimate charitable activities are not disrupted or discouraged? Today in Mombasa, the Talk to Your Regulator (#T2R) forum is shifting the narrative from compliance theory to practical action focusing on fair financial access, bank relations, and actionable compliance for NPOs. In partnership with the Public Benefit Organisations Regulatory Authority (PBORA) and Coast Civil Society Network for Human Rights, the forum brings stakeholders together to address these issues, with particular attention to concerns raised by coastal organisations. The discussion aims to advance proportionate, risk-based regulation that safeguards the integrity of the sector while enabling legitimate NPOs to continue their work. #TalkToYourRegulator #T2RCoastEdition by @nurutrustnetwork

Your electricity bill. The price of food. Whether the tap runs. Whether there are jobs. All of these are shaped by how our natural resources are managed, even if you have never seen a mine, a forest or an oil field. So who decides how our land, water, energy and minerals are used? Who benefits? And who gets left out? Join young creators from across the region as they explain it in plain language, with no jargon and no lectures. 📅 Thursday 15 October 2026 ⏰ 7 PM EAT | 6 PM CAT 📍 TikTok LIVE, Link in bio. As we close this series, the lessons connect to one central idea, active citizenship requires people, institutions, and tools working together. Here's what we're doing about it. We're building Sauti Stack so feedback actually gets a response, meeting young people where they already are, and staying open to what communities tell us they need. From participation to agency. From dialogue to action. Join us in keeping the conversation going. #CivicParticipation #DigitalInclusion #YouthLeadership by @nurutrustnetwork
Day 2 of the Athens Democracy Forum moved from diagnosis to practical tools for protecting and renewing democracy. 🇬🇷 The central message was that democracy is defended in everyday systems and relationships, and not only at election time. Reliable information, independent journalism, accountable institutions and civic agency form a connected democratic infrastructure. When those foundations weaken, power can concentrate even while elections continue. Five takeaways 1. Information is a democratic necessity, and independent journalism is a public good 2. AI can help election administration but needs safeguards and human oversight 3.Inclusion has to mean real power, with the networks and resources to stay politically active 4.Resistance depends on sustained organising and civic networks Young people and migrants are democratic actors and not passive beneficiaries We will keep sharing what we learn in Athens and what it means for our work on civic participation and inclusion. #AthensDemocracyForum #ADF2026 #Iran #MiddleEast #Geopolitics #Peace #Diplomacy #GlobalAffairs by @nurutrustnetwork
