Between passing bikes, slipping costumes, out-of-sync moves and colliding hands… we finally found our rhythm and plenty of reasons to laugh. 😂

One more try, then another, until we finally got the final take. But somewhere between the missed steps and the endless giggles, we were making memories just as beautiful as the dance itself.

Every imperfect take became a memory worth keeping. 🥰✨

Happy National Batik Day! ♥️🇮🇩

Batik carries stories, heritage, and identity through its patterns and colors. In 2009, UNESCO inscribed Indonesian Batik on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Last year, we highlighted indigo batik. This year, we’re wearing batik with motifs inspired by Balinese Geringsing weaving in four sunset-inspired shades. 🌅

Traditional Geringsing from Bali is made using double ikat: both lengthwise and crosswise threads are carefully tied and dyed before being woven together. Precise alignment brings its intricate geometric, floral, and figurative patterns to life, a craft requiring remarkable patience and skill.

Brave enough to defeat a giant.
Meet Timun Mas. 🌿✨

We’re honored to return to Southeast Asia Day at the Aquarium of the Pacific with something new: an interactive storytelling performance of this enchanting Indonesian folktale at the Marine Life Theater.

This won’t be a sit-and-listen story! There’s something for the whole family to enjoy, and children will get to join the adventure. With three actors, Indonesian music, dance, and singing, we’ll bring this enchanting folktale to life together!

We’re delighted to have Lil’Li Latisha @lilli_queenb as our creative director! A performing artist who began her career at age 10, she’s also the founder of I EXIST!, a nonprofit bringing arts education to underserved youth in Indonesia.

A little coincidence between the sky and our kain. 🌅

Our batik kain, with the Geringsing motif from Bali, happened to echo the colors around us: blue and maroon in the sky, mustard catching the last bit of sunset, and brown blending into the landscape. 💙♥️🧡🤎

Almost like the sunset picked our colors for us!

Kala Sang Surya Tenggelam 🌅

This week, we lost the legendary Mas Guruh Sukarno Putra. Sharing this sunset photo with Chrisye’s rendition of “Kala Sang Surya Tenggelam,” a song Mas Guruh wrote, feels especially meaningful today.

As a dancer, choreographer, composer, songwriter, and visionary of Indonesian performing arts, he inspired generations of artists through his dance and music.

Sang surya telah tenggelam, tetapi cahaya dan warisannya akan terus menyinari dunia seni Indonesia.

Tattoo 🖤 | A glimpse into Dayak Kenyah tradition 🪶

For many Dayak communities of Borneo, tattooing is far more than decoration. It is an ancient tradition connected to identity, beauty, nature, spirituality, and a person’s journey through life.

Among the Dayak Kenyah of Kalimantan, traditional tattooing—known as betik—has been practiced for generations. Traditionally created by hand, these tattoos carried meanings that could reflect identity, social status, beauty, spirituality, and the natural world. 🌿

For Dayak Kenyah women, betik was also associated with beauty and identity, with intricate patterns traditionally appearing on the hands, arms, legs, and feet. The motifs reflected the rich visual language, beliefs, and relationship with nature found within Dayak culture.

Before performing our Burung Enggang dance, we had a little “tattoo day” of our own. These are temporary, modern tattoos, not traditional Kenyah betik motifs—but they gave us an opportunity to learn about and appreciate the extraordinary tattoo heritage of the people whose culture inspired the dance we are presenting.

Sometimes learning a dance takes us far beyond the choreography, it leads us into the history, art, and traditions behind it. 🖤🪶🌿
