Opening Reception Tonight!

Oct. 16, 2026
@suma_museum
Cedar City, UT

Tooveep (The Land) is an exhibition of contemporary Indigenous Art that will explore the intersection of identity, landscape, and storytelling through the work of Indigenous artists from the American Southwest and beyond. The title, derived from the Southern Paiute word Too-veep, meaning “the land,” reflects the enduring relationship between people and place.

Ms. Douglas’s curatorial approach is rooted in Indigenous storytelling, self-determination, and joy. “Seeing a smile on their faces, or a deep, loud laugh from an Auntie, is the driving force,” Douglas says. “I want to show work that reflects the heart of our Indigenous people.” As such, she has selected more than 20 artists that include many from the Southwest and Great Basin whose work she knows intimately, such as Avis Charley (Spirit Lake Dakota/Diné), and Jean LaMarr (Northern Paiute/Maidu), as well as other artists from the Gochman Family Collection, including Marie Watt (Seneca & German- Scot) and Jeffrey Gibson (Mississippi Band of Choctaw and Cherokee), who represent Tribal Nations and Indigenous experiences from across North America.

I am honored to introduce the ninth addition to the First American Girl Series, Fawn.

Fawn Douglas (Las Vegas Paiute Tribe) stands with an omniscient look. We wonder how many of you are knowledgeable about the Las Vegas Paiute Tribe, or how their homelands in Las Vegas, Nevada, are some of the most sacred cultural landscapes to Nüwü or Southern Paiute people. The young city of Las Vegas (est. 1905) rests upon ancient sacred groundwater, adjacent to Nüva Kaiv (Mt. Charleston) and Red Rocks–places of creation and mythos. Since long before the first casinos were erected, Nüwü have stewarded one of the most beautiful places in all of the Mojave Desert. They are basket makers and desert peoples; they gather pine nuts, and they survive unimaginable changes to their homelands–I imagine one of the most drastic transformations in US history. Their modern-day reservation, known colloquially as “The Colony,” is near Fremont Street.
Fawn’s identity is contextualized in the carefully curated cultural accoutrement that surrounds her. We designed her dollbox with love for mid-century modern Las Vegas design. Blending time and symbology because they coexist in a compressed timeline of cultural collision. Nüwü and Las Vegas are both a part of the people–sometimes these stories of survival are ironic and quirky, and bring layers of complexity that are a truth. Spend time with the objects with contributions by Everett Pikyavitt, Uncle Lamar ‘Este” Anderson, Leah Mata Fragua, and Fawn herself.
Fawn is an artist, activist, community leader, and former burlesque dancer based in Las Vegas. She is the head matriarch of Nüwü Art Studios + Nüwü Art Gallery + Community Center, and is also a board member for the nonprofit IndigenousAF. This portrait from the series honors Fawn’s enduring leadership and her work at the confluence of art, identity, and Indigenous sovereignty–grounded in the power and presence of the Las Vegas Paiute Nation. We hope this photograph imparts a glimmer of knowledge that sparks an interest in learning and honoring the legacy of the Nüwü.

Fawn Douglas (Las Vegas Paiute Tribe), Nuwu Um-buh-gah, Learn Nuwu Deck #1, Southern Paiute Language Learning Flashcards (2024) and Kwee You Its! (2019)
Artist and activist Fawn Douglas created this deck of cards and game to contribute to Nuwu (Southern Paiute) language revitalization efforts. The flash cards focus on animals, birds, insects, and weather of the Mojave Desert, as well as people and cultural items such as elders, basket, gourd, and cradleboard. Kwee You Its translates to”whirlwind” in Southern Paiute.
Northern and Southern Paiute are part of the Uto-Aztecan language family. Like many Indigenous languages, they are critically endangered. Children forced to attend boarding schools were punished, sometimes severely, for speaking their native languages. One survivor recalled having pins put in her tongue.
Students at some Nevada high schools can take Paiute language classes for credit toward graduation, and in 2019 the University of Reno developed a Paiute language program.

Next Monday!!! I got snacks, bring your art and let’s create. See you next week :)

Also calling out my Dazante friends, please feel free to bring your regalia. Let’s also work on our trajes

✨ CREATORS SPACE ✨
A space for artists, creatives, and community.
We’re opening the doors at Malinalli Studios every 2nd Monday from 6–9PM.
This isn’t a class.
This isn’t a workshop.
This is a gathering.
Bring a project you’re working on. Sit beside other creatives. Paint. Draw. Write. Design. Dream. Build.
The intention is simple:
To strengthen our art community.
To connect.
To create alongside one another.
When artists gather, something powerful happens. Energy shifts. Ideas expand. Community grows.
Let’s build together. 🤝🎨

📍 Malinalli Studios
1335 S. Maryland Pkwy

A special thank you to @iaf.inc for their sponsorship in supporting this to come into fruition. We love and appreciate you all ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥 by @nuwuart

We are terribly saddened by the gun violence on October 2, 2026, which resulted in the harm caused to First Friday attendees and heartbreaking loss. Our hearts go out to the family and friends of the 15-year-old boy who lost his life, others who were hurt, and everyone who was and will be affected by this senseless violence.

We are reminded that our communities are facing daily violence, reduced program funding, and few outlets for our youth to positively express themselves. Our values serve as the foundation and motivation for our business approach, and we will continue working to come up with creative solutions to increase community programming.

As we get ready to open a new space in the Arts District, we are glad to be in the heart of where people gather to enjoy artistic expression. We are reflecting on what took place at First Friday, what we experienced while there, and how we can contribute to the community in the future.
