Carter G. Woodson, the founder of Black History Week (now Black History Month), was also the founder of the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History and The Journal of Negro History. What was unique about the creation of Negro History Week was that it was strategically placed in the month of February by Carter G. Woodson, aligning it with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass.

February 2026 marks the 100-year celebration of the recognition of Black History Month.

Before his academic success, Carter G. Woodson was a coal miner in West Virginia. Prior to 1926, he educated himself through life experiences and from the struggles of Black people—particularly coal miners who had endured the Civil War and fought for their freedom. Carter would read to the coal miners about politics, tariffs, and the gold standard. He did not begin high school until the age of 20; however, he completed it in just two years because he had already educated himself. After graduating from high school, he went on to attend and graduate from Berea College in Kentucky, the University of Chicago, and Harvard University, where he became the second African American to earn a PhD.

W.E.B. Du Bois—the first African American to earn a doctorate from Harvard—learned of Carter G. Woodson’s creation of Black History Week and stated that it was the greatest single achievement of the Harlem Renaissance era, which sparked an explosion of Black culture, music, poetry, literature, and art in Harlem, N.Y. by @nvmesure

Great Job HM1 Elston for continuing to excel! You never let your foot off the gas pedal and now your hard work and dedication has paid off. You took this warship across the Pacific Ocean making its presence known throughout Asia. You led Sailors within Health Services Department, the Fleet Surgical Team Detachment and within the Second Class Petty Officer Association. Tomorrow I need you to stay the course and continue your journey of growth both personally and professionally! The most important thing you can do is make sure you lead junior Sailors and take them from where they are currently to where they have not been!
