Happy book birthday to my second child! They Bloom at Night is about a queer teen’s survival in a post-apocalyptic world full of red algae, where past traumas may be more horrifying the present’s. Forced to hunt the creatures drowning her neighbors, Noon makes new friends and remeets the old, all the while shedding her own skin. It’s my ode to the south, immigrant families, beautiful anime, and becoming your true self against all odds.

Writing this book made me get the help I needed and as it finds its way to readers, I feel myself able to let go. This story is yours now. It might sound serious but there’s plenty of hijinks in the book and ofc a cat named Sandbag.

The future is soup. 🍜

Pick it up at a store near you or request at your local library! Links and events info in bio.

Helm is a mixed Palestinian writer with work published in @fikra_magazine and @sotospeakjrnl. Her debut novel centers on one family’s ancestral home of Haifa, and is a powerful and intimate look at what it means to make a home, lose it, and to return only to find it irrevocably changed.

Seating at 7pm. Masks required. Registration required for virtual attendance at crowdcast.io/c/our-cut-of-salt.

Note: To encourage purchases from our bookshop partners, we do not pop up with the library at Charis events! taken in Charis Books and More/Charis Circle by @nvtran_

“Family is a kind of wilderness. Roots hidden, teeth bared, some dead and others like a rock unearthed. You uncover shiny gems, one by one, or find a rotting secret. Family goes deep, and there are pieces you’ll never see. Earth’s inner core is a scorching ocean of iron and nickle, but has anyone felt it?”

I was beyond lucky to get my hands on an ARC of one of my most anticipated reads of 2027, and somehow it was even better than I imagined!? Tess’ story is one of intergenerational horrors, starting with her grandmother’s trauma during the Vietnam War and culminating with Tess and her friends’ fight for survival. Both an ode to the diasporic Vietnamese community and a chilling tale of demons and magic, The Summoning of Tess Phạm is a killer third book by Trang Thanh Tran with an ending that’s to die for.

🌟 REVIEW 🌟

The opening chapter rolling into 13 hours earlier had me HOOKED! 👀 like how did they even get to that point?!?

I love found footage & the camcorder recordings were chilling! The supernatural aspect was haunting but the real horror was something terrifying for young adults to be up against.

The setting was very atmospheric & chaotic at times with this overwhelming sense of dread hanging over everyone in this daunting forest.

Tess was an emotional mess, rightfully so. However, I felt for her after having to battle one battle after another. She’s loyal & vulnerable but very resilient- a character I enjoyed reading about. The horror was horror-ing 🩸

Tropes:
🪦 death/grief
🇻🇳 Vietnam folklore
📹 found footage
🧑‍🧒‍🧒 family relationships
👿 possessions
👹 demonic entity
👻 generational curse
🌲 remote wilderness
🩸 rituals/sacrifices
💕 sapphic romance

🖤The Summoning of Tess Pham by @nvtran_ bookmail from @bloomsburybooksus 🖤

It’s always a great day when I get wrapped pink book from Bloomsbury! But I was so excited when I saw what was inside. This is definitely going on my fall TBR.

This YA horror releases February 2nd and will be available on audio.

🖤Blurb🖤

From the New York Times bestselling and award-winning author Trang Thanh Tran comes a pulse-pounding thrill ride set in the remote forest of Vietnam, as three best friends battle to survive the night.

An ancient demon. Three best friends on a trip of a lifetime. Six hours to survive until dawn.

Tess Pham has always been a mess, especially after her brother died. Depression, grief, and a secret crush on her best friend have made the last year feel like hell.

Now, a long-awaited trip to Vietnam is supposed to bring closure. Tess’s family plans to bury her brother’s ashes in their grandmother’s remote village, and her best friends, Nell and Evie, have come along for moral support. They’ve been through everything together, but a demon might be the breaking point.

When Tess’s ailing grandmother vanishes, the girls venture into the wilderness where they find bloodstained altars to a local deity who has consumed the Pham family since the war.

With six hours until dawn, they must break the ritual—or decide who among them will be sacrificed.

Tensions rise. Secrets are unearthed. But some demons just can’t be buried.

Thank you so much to the author and Bloomsbury for this gifted book!
