In addition to the work you put into your machines, there are steps you can take to mentally prepare for the tasks of decision making in the backcountry. Seek opportunities, such as annual Avalanche Center sponsored Snow and Avalanche Workshops (SAWs) or local shop presentations on avalanche safety as you Continue Your Avalanche Education. If you are ready, take the next course in the AIARE sequence.

Electronic devices, metal objects, and magnets of any kind will interfere with your transceiver’s signal if they are too close.

TRANSMITTING: Always wear your transceiver at least 20 cm away from anything electronic, metallic, or magnetic. NO: heated jackets, foil-lined jackets, magnetic jacket closures, or chest-mounted cameras.

SEARCHING: Increase the distance when searching. Always hold your transceiver at least 50 cm away from all electronics, metals, and magnets.

Classroom learning is vital to build a foundation for your avalanche knowledge, but seeing avalanches firsthand in the field can be one of the biggest learning experiences you can have.
