In BRUXISMO, El Ángel Exterminador & Anastasiia Vorobiova unfold a visceral seven-part mystic-horror narrative exploring technological encroachment, surveillance, and structural violence inflicting wounds upon the spiritual and psychic realms and becoming incarnations through the body.

Drawing from their Mexican and Ukrainian folk heritages, the piece blends real-time visuals, a hybrid use of digital and analogue techniques, electromagnetic coils and the live processing of both voice and an experimental instrument crafted from bones, teeth, metal and stone to conjure an intuitive vision of a future shaped by collective resistance and liberation.

TW: This performance may contain graphic visuals and sound design simulating blood, gunshots, drones, and bones breaking, as well as the use of strobing and fog.

Avec BRUXISMO, El Ángel Exterminador et Anastasiia Vorobiova déploient un récit mystico-horrifique viscéral en sept chapitres explorant l’emprise technologique, la surveillance et la violence structurelle qui lacèrent les sphères spirituelles et psychiques, jusqu’à s’incarner à travers le corps.

S’appuyant sur leurs héritages folkloriques mexicain et ukrainien, l’œuvre combine visuels en temps réel, un usage hybride de techniques numériques et analogiques, des bobines électromagnétiques, ainsi que le traitement en direct de la voix et d’un instrument expérimental fabriqué à partir d’os, de dents, de métal et de pierre, afin de faire émerger une vision intuitive d’un futur traversé par la résistance collective et la libération.

Avertissement : Cette performance peut contenir des images explicites ainsi qu’un design sonore simulant du sang, des coups de feu, des drones et des os qui se brisent. ainsi que l’utilisation d’effets stroboscopiques et de la fumée.

🌐✨ Stepping into new dimensions...

Over two days, media artist Anastasiia Vorobiova and multidisciplinary artist Julian Hou led an immersive VR workshop, inviting participants to explore the world of virtual reality through performance, interactive discussion, and hands-on guidance.

From avatars to altered realities, this was a deep dive into the future of artistic expression.

Deer Lake Artist Residencies and Shadbolt Centre of Art are pleased to invite you to a research presentation by our May Artists in Residence, Julian Hou and Anastasiia Vorobiova.

When: Tuesday, June 23rd, 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM

Where: Shadbolt Centre for the Arts, Studio 102

Join artists Julian Hou and Anastasiia Vorobiova for a presentation on their ongoing research project exploring the cultural legacy of vaudeville and its relationship to contemporary technologies of performance, virtuality, and spectatorship.

Through a combination of archival research, digital modelling, virtual reality, and live performance experiments, their project investigates the theatre as a space where illusion, transformation, memory, and collective imagination intersect. As part of their residency at Deer Lake, the artists will share recent research while discussing how historical performance traditions can inform new forms of immersive and hybrid artistic experiences.

This event is free and open to the public. Come connect with the artists, learn about their creative process, and engage in the dialogue!

Does it feel like there’ve been too many “great men” lately? Let’s look at what Deleuze and Guattari propose for dealing with this figure…

D&G describe how Oedipus functions as a mechanism that internalizes authority. Figures like Luther exemplify a compromise with the Superego. The paternal figure is taken inside the subject and negotiated rather than openly confronted. At the same time, there exists the crowd, a collective formation structured by secondary parental images that are no longer individual but social. Under certain historical conditions, a meeting occurs between the “great individual” and the mass, for example Luther with sixteenth-century Christianity, or Hitler with the German people.

the connection between a leader and a crowd is not based on similarity. The mass does not follow a leader because they are “the same,” share the same personality, or fully identify with them as an equal. Instead, the relationship works through asymmetrical roles, meaning the two sides occupy unequal positions in a symbolic and emotional structure.

What is at stake is not merely personal psychology, but a political and historical process in which conflicts around authority are displaced, repeated, and managed through internalization. The so-called “great man” becomes great not because of moral value, but because he produces an original solution, whether constructive or destructive, to the Oedipal conflict, and this solution resonates with collective desire.
