If it seems like we all have a picture or story with Ryan Coogler it’s because we do! He’s that great of a guy.

2023, Sundance. One of my mentors @nybongiovi , the producer who found Ryan at USC & helped make Fruitvale Station a reality, introduced me to Mr. Coogler. Come to find out having attended Berkeley where I was a student athlete & him being from Oakland attending Saint Mary’s then Sac St. as a football player, and both later attending USC’s School of Cinematic Arts, we had a lot of mutual friends & associates.

To be completely honest, when I first started my screenwriting journey a little over five years ago, I tried to hide the fact that I played college and professional basketball. Why? There used to be a ton of negative stereotypes around athletes and our acumen and intelligence; especially for players of predominately black sports such as basketball & football.

At Berkeley, I hated when students assumed athletes got in solely based on their athletic prowess. They would rarely acknowledge how hard we worked or the fact that many of us grew up in households with a strong foundation of academic rigor.

People also assumed athletes were entitled & got unearned “passes”. So being the naturally competitive person I am, I didn’t want ANYONE thinking I needed a handout. I was going to be a successful writer because I’m hard working, disciplined, dedicated, and DAMN GOOD. Period.

But as I’ve watched Coogler’s career evolve, I’ve learned that I don’t have to hide a thing. My talent will speak for itself. I am who I am because of ALL of my experiences. I have lived all over the world thanks to basketball. I have met so many beautiful people thanks to basketball. And I have learned to fail and fail again & set goals so high people think I’m delusional thanks to the unrelenting grind, practice, & sheer heartbreak you get from playing sports at the highest level.

So thank you Ryan for teaching us to be ourselves at all times. To not wait for permission. And to set the bar so high people will eventually catch up.

I can get involved with that indeed!

🥳 #BedfordPark is an official selection in U.S. Dramatic Competition at #SundanceFilmFestival 2026! We're grateful to everyone who collaborated with us on this project - we couldn't have done it without you! 💛🙏🏼 BEDFORD PARK, written and directed by Stephanie Ahn, tells the story of Audrey (Moon Choi), a Korean-American woman from New Jersey who finds love and self-discovery with Eli (Son Sukku), an ex-wrestler with a troubled past. Together, they navigate cultural pressures, personal identity, and the power of chosen love. by @nybongiovi
