Yesterday was an action-packed day connecting with NYC’s nonprofit sector!

We kicked things off at “Preparing for Success in the Next Budget Cycle,” hosted by @Kasirer @anatgerstein.inc @nonprofitnewyork , and Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer.

MONS Executive Director Annie Minguez delivered the keynote address, highlighting challenges facing nonprofits and the administration’s efforts to ensure providers are paid on time and can continue delivering critical services without disruption.

We appreciated the valuable feedback from providers and thoughtful insights shared by the panelists!

Next, we joined @dmhelenarteaga and @nycmayor and @hispanic_federation President and CEO Frankie Miranda for a fireside chat with more than 60 nonprofit providers to discuss challenges impacting Latino communities and ways to better support Latino-serving nonprofits.

It was a great day of meaningful conversations and collaboration! We look forward to more opportunities to connect with and support NYC’s nonprofit sector. 🤝 by @nyc_nonprofits

In case you missed it... last Thursday, MONS Executive Director Annie Minguez proudly joined Mayor Mamdani (@nycmayor), Speaker Menin (@speakermenin), and city leaders to announce the expansion of the City Council Discretionary Grant Pilot alongside 22 grantees.

By cutting nine steps from the traditional discretionary contracting process, the expanded pilot delivers City funding to community-based nonprofits up to nine months faster. This streamlined approach allows eligible nonprofits to receive the critical funding they need to provide essential services to New Yorkers who rely on them every day.

Special thanks to AMNY (@amnewyork), Brooklyn Daily Eagle, WPIX 11 (@pix11news), NY Daily News (@nydailynews) and Harlem World (@harlemworldmagazine) for covering this exciting announcement!

How does listening become action when it comes to building community-based mental health programs shaped by science and lived experience?
▪️
We often share stories of people with lived experience to highlight community mental health needs but don’t include them or their experience meaningfully when shaping treatment, policy, or decisions that directly impact them.
▪️
During Mental Illness Awareness Week, we recognize how science, shaped by lived experience, can transform into hope.
▪️
On World Mental Health Day, we take that idea further: How can listening to those we serve lead to meaningful action and change?
▪️
Across NYC, young people, caregivers, students, and frontline workers are helping shape mental health programs, identify barriers, and strengthen community-based support.
▪️
Their experiences offer knowledge that research alone cannot always capture.
▪️
When we turn what we learn into action, we can improve programs, strengthen resources, and create more responsive pathways to care.
▪️
Meaningful listening isn’t simply hearing someone’s story. It’s recognizing their expertise and creating opportunities for that knowledge to shape what happens next.

NYC Agencies, service providers, nonprofits, and mental health advocates: do you have resources that are informed by the communities you serve? Drop them in the comments!
