every december new york turns into a christmas movie πŸŽ…πŸ»

🎬 did you know scenes from home alone 2 weren’t sets; they were filmed on the streets, hotels and parks of manhattan. these moments on screen became the world’s blueprint for christmas in the city.

❄️ this year, forecasters are predicting 25 to 35 inches of snow across nyc, which would make it the most wintery season in the last five years. 2024 brought 12.9 inches and the year prior barely reached 8. if the projections hold, december in the city might finally look like the christmas movies that made it famous.

have you ever seen christmas in the city❓

snow is familiar to new yorkers…the facts behind it aren’t

❄️ snow isn’t actually white
snow is made of clear ice crystals. because light doesn’t pass straight through the crystals easily, it reflects and scatters, which is what makes snow look white.

🎨 snow can appear pink, orange, yellow or green
while snow itself is colorless; dust, pollution or algae can change the way it looks. rare events have even caused entire regions to see colored snow, including orange snow in siberia and pink snow across parts of russia.

πŸ”Š snow affects sound
fresh snow dampens noise by absorbing sound waves, which is why the city often feels quieter after a snowstorm. when that snow melts and refreezes into ice, it can reflect sound; allowing noise to travel farther and feel more pronounced.

🧀 snow can keep you warm
snow is made up mostly of trapped air, which makes it a strong insulator. that’s why animals burrow into snow to survive winter and why igloos can be significantly warmer inside than the freezing temperatures outside.

which one of these facts surprised you❓

the empire state building lighting up the skyline in blue πŸ’™

πŸ—οΈ completed in 1931 during the great depression, the empire state building stood as the tallest building in the world for nearly 40 years and still remains one of the most iconic skyscrapers ever built. including its antenna, the tower rises 1,454 feet above new york city.

πŸŒƒ its famous lights have become a tradition in the skyline, changing colors for holidays, major events, awareness campaigns, sports championships and cultural moments throughout the year. after a major LED modernization in 2012, the empire state building gained the ability to display more than 16 million different colors and dynamic lighting effects visible for miles across the city.

πŸš• the empire state building attracts around 4 million visitors every year and sits in the heart of midtown manhattan at 34th street and 5th avenue, surrounded by some of the busiest streets in the world.

what’s your favorite color to see on the empire state building lights❓

β€œnew york…what were you like in the 90’s?”

πŸ™οΈ the twin towers stood over lower manhattan and could be seen from almost every part of the city, with the north tower reaching 1,368 feet tall

πŸ’΅ a subway ride was $1.25, the average rent in manhattan was around $900, movie tickets cost $2 and home prices averaged around $250,000

πŸš• yellow cabs filled the streets before rideshare apps existed, with around 12,000 licensed taxis on the road compared to more than 80,000 rideshare vehicles operating across nyc today

did you experience nyc in the 90s❓

say hello to spring 🌸

πŸ—“οΈ for a short window each year, the city shifts from bare branches and gray streets to full bloom, turning familiar blocks into something unrecognizable.

β˜€οΈ from the december solstice to late may, manhattan gains about 3 hours of daylight (with sunsets moving from around 4:30 pm to after 8:30 pm), and studies have found up to 15% higher life satisfaction scores during brighter spring and summer months.

🌳 new york city has approximately 7 million trees across streets, parks and neighborhoods, which when in full bloom can make the city feel cooler, greener and completely different within weeks.

⬇️ SPRING STATS

πŸ“Š central park spans 843 acres and draws over 40 million visits a year, with spring being one of its busiest seasons.

πŸŒ‡ by late may, nyc sunsets arrive nearly 4 hours later than winter, adding roughly 120 extra evening daylight hours.

πŸ†’ one mature street tree can lower nearby temperatures by up to 9 degrees, which is why greener blocks often feel cooler instantly.

what’s your favorite season in the city❓

the winter we saw coming

❄️ on december 7th, @nycwow predicted this would be one of the snowiest winters new york has seen in years. 90 days later, central park is buried under one of the heaviest snowfalls the city has seen in decades.

🌑️ why this winter is different: prolonged stretches of colder air across the northeast have kept temperatures near or below freezing during several recent storm systems, allowing snow to accumulate rather than melt. when temperatures remain below 32°F between storms, existing snow can remain and build with each new system.

πŸ“Š to put it in perspective: new york city averages about 25–30 inches of snow in an entire winter, but some areas of the city have already seen over 20 inches from a single storm this season.

have you seen central park in the snow❓
