The grand opening of Black Panther Park in Skyway, Washington on Sunday, April 19, marked a sweeping moment of representation and honor. After nine years in the making, it stands as the nation’s first park dedicated to the Black Panther movement, specifically paying tribute to the history and legacy of the Seattle Black Panther chapter. Contracted and co-designed by Nyema Clark (@nyema8), founder and “farm queen” of Nurturing Roots Farm (@nurturingrootsfarm), the park’s design and purpose is intentionally rooted in the Black Panther Party’s survival programs, integrating practical resources like a food pantry and lending library directly into the landscape.Opened in an area dealing with cultural displacement, Black Panther Park serves as a point of connection for King County’s largest concentration of Black residents. Original Black Panther Party members attended the park’s inauguration, affirming its importance as a place of inspiration for generations to come. As host of the grand opening Deaunte Damper (@dampeyalife1) said, the park celebrates a movement while signifying that the fight is far from over. Black Panther Park is a call to action, he said, demonstrating what is possible when the community mobilizes to uplift Black and brown people, protects Black women, and fundamentally refuses to back down. For those looking to get involved with the park, visit nurturingrootsfarm.org/bpp-skyway Photos: Susan Fried (@fried.susan)#WWConverge #BlackPantherParty #BlackPantherPark #BlackRepresentation by @nyema8

Rooted in Love: Honoring Elijah L. Lewis Through Community and CultivationOn March 31, 2025, the Rainier Beach Urban Farm in South Seattle became a place of healing and remembrance. Community members gathered to honor Elijah L. Lewis, a beloved organizer and visionary who was tragically taken by gun violence in 2023.The memorial, a collaboration between a collaborative effort between Solace, an organization founded in Elijah’s honor to provide grief support, and Nurturing Roots (@nurturingrootsfarm), a community-driven urban farming initiative rooted in self-sustainability and empowerment; included planting, volunteering, and releasing root-bound plants — powerful symbols of grief, growth, and new beginnings. “Elijah cared about community and the Earth,” said Solace member Jarred Issac. “Today was about doing what he loved and creating space for Black and Brown folks to connect.”For Elijah’s mother, Jenine Lewis (@jlewismama), Solace has become a lifeline. “Some people have never talked about their grief until they come here,” she said. “We provide a safe space to feel, to share, and to move forward.”Nyema Clark (@nyema8), founder of Nurturing Roots, led the group in replanting — a metaphor for personal growth. “Sometimes we all need more space,” she said. “Elijah showed up for us. Today we show up for him.”This memorial wasn’t just a tribute — it was a continuation of Elijah’s mission. Through community, connection, and love, his legacy lives on.Long Live Elijah L. In honor of Earth Day this week, we partnered with @nurturingrootsfarm to bring you their “Backyard Boogie” Burger!Nurturing Roots is a community farming program that values community, self-sufficiency, food empowerment, social justice, and education. They have built community by providing access, education, and re-engaging folks with our environment. Founder/Director, Nyema Clark @nyema8 is a passionate and dedicated farmer who is committed to cultivating healthy, sustainable, and inclusive food systems. She recognized that many people, especially those in underserved communities, lack access to fresh, healthy, and culturally relevant food. Nurturing Roots Farm has provided fresh produce to local schools, food banks, and community organizations, and also hosts community gardening, cooking, and food preservation events.Previously located on Beacon Hill, they are currently seeking a new farm in the Seattle-area to once again cultivate community on a home site. To support Nurturing Roots and their mission, you can contribute to their fundraiser and stay updated on upcoming events and programs through their website. Your support helps them continue to provide fresh, healthy food and empower the community through education and sustainable farming practices.Inspired by urban farming, growing your own ingredients in the backyard, and food preservation - the “Backyard Boogie Burger” features tomatoes, lettuce, pickled red onions, and a fig aioli. The fried chicken is sprinkled with “Ginger Hendrix” seasoning by @avenuesouthseattle , Nyema’s brand of natural culinary and body products.Enjoy the “Backyard Boogie” Burger and join us this Monday for #Burger4Burger day! For every Backyard Boogie Burger sold on Monday 4/28, we will be donating the same amount of burgers to Nurturing Roots to be served at their events and programming. by @nyema8
