After nearly three decades of leadership as New York Folklore’s Executive Director, Ellen McHale will retire on May 1, 2027.

“New York Folklore has been more than a job,” says Ellen. “It has been the people with whom I’ve worked: the artists and tradition bearers, the community leaders, and my public folklore colleagues who share my passionate support for the traditional arts and cultural activities of our diverse country.”

A transition committee to oversee the search for New York Folklore’s next leader and plan for this exciting next stage of the organization’s growth. A national search is now underway and a full job description and application can be found on the New York Folklore website.

Jordan Taylor Hill has been developing this music quietly for some time. On Friday, October 2, he’ll share it publicly for the first time.

Songs Born of Tradition is a work-in-progress collection of original music shaped by the rhythms, sounds and traditions Jordan has spent years studying, performing and learning from across the African diaspora.

From West African rhythm and Caribbean traditions to Latin American music and the Black American music that raised him, the project explores what happens when those influences meet in the music Jordan is creating now.

The evening marks the first public performance of Songs Born of Tradition, featuring live percussion, original music and collaborators, followed by a conversation about the work and where it comes from.

Voices in Stone by artist Anping Liu @andrewl147 opens Friday, September 18. Stop by for the opening reception at the New York Folklore Shop and Gallery from 5PM-8PM, during @artnightschenectady

Voices in Stone features the ancient art of Chinese seal carving reinterpreted into an exploration of cross-cultural connections between China and the US. By combining Eastern and Western symbols and phrases into the seals and their accompanying artwork, artist Anping Liu invites us to reflect on cultural exchange and influence as he approaches the fortieth anniversary of his arrival to the US.
